Question :11

Pure milk costs Rs.3.60 per litre. A milkman adds water to 25 litres of pure milk and sells the mixture at Rs.3 per litre. How many litres of water does he add ?

Answer: (a)

In mixture,

${\text"Quantity of pure milk"/\text"Quantity of water"} = {3 - 0}/{3.6 - 3} = {3}/{0.6} = {5/1}$

Since in every 5 litres of milk, he adds 1 litre of water.

∴ In every 25 litres of milk, he adds 5 litres of water.

Question :12

The sum of three numbers is 98. If the ratio of the first to the second is 2 : 3 and that of the second to the third is 5 : 8, then the second number is :

Answer: (a)

A : B = 2 : 3 = 2 × 5 : 3 × 5 = 10 : 15

and B : C = 5 : 8 = 5 × 3 : 8 × 3 = 15 : 24

Therefore, A : B : C = 10 : 15 : 24

Let the numbers be 10x, 15x and 24x.

Then, 10x + 15x + 24x = 98

or 49x = 98 or x = 2

⇒ Second number = 15x = 15 × 2 = 30

Question :13

The monthly income of two persons are in the ratio of 4 : 5 and their monthly expenditures are in the ratio of 7 : 9. If each saves Rs 50 a month, then what are their monthly incomes ?

Answer: (d)

Let the income of two persons be Rs 4x and Rs 5x

and their expenses be Rs 7y and Rs 9y.

Therefore, 4x – 7y = 50 ... (i)

and 5x – 9y = 50 ... (ii)

From (i) and (ii), we get

x = 100 and y = 50

The income of the two persons are Rs 400 and Rs 500, respectively.

Question :14

Ratio of the earnings (in Rs.) of A and B is 4 : 7. If the earnings of A increase by 50% and those of B decrease by 25%, the new ratio of their earnings becomes 8 : 7. How much is A earning ?

Answer: (d)

Ratio of earning of A and B is 4 : 7

A earning = Rs. 4x.

B earning = Rs.7x

A earning increase by 50%

Now, A earning = 4x + 4x × ${500}/{100}$ = 6x

B earning decreases by 25%

Now B earning = 7x - 7x × ${25}/{100} = {21x}/{4}$

Now, Ratio = ${{6x}/{{21x}/4}}$ = 8 : 7

∴ Data inadequate

Question :15

A mixture of glycerine and water contains 35% glycerine by weight. Twenty five grams of water is added to such 100 grams of mixture. What % of glycerine by weight is there in the new mixture ?

Answer: (d)

% of glycerine in new mixture

= ${\text"Original % of glycerine"}/{\text"mixture weight + water added"}$ × 100

= ${35}/{100 + 25}$ × 100 = 28%
