How many seconds will a train 60 m in length, travelling at the rate of 42 km an hour, rate to pass another train 84 m long, proceeding in the same direction at the rate of 30 km an hour?
Answer: (a)
Relative speed = 42 – 30 = 12 km/hr = 12 × $5/{18} = {10}/3$m/s
Time = ${\text"Total length of both the trains"/\text"Relative speed"} = {84 + 60}/{{10}/3}$
= ${144 × 3}/10$ = 43.2 seconds
A car travels a distance of 170 km in 2 hours partly at a speed of 100 km/hr and partly at 50 km/hr. Find the distance travelled at speed of 100 km/hr.
Answer: (b)
Let distance travelled at 100 km/hr be 'x' km.
∴ Distance travelled at 50 km/hr is (170 – x) km.
Total time taken to cover 170 km is 2 hrs.
∴ $x/100+{170-x}/50=2$
⇒x+340-2x=200
x = 140 km
∴ Distance travelled at 100 km/hr is 140 km.
The average speed of a car is 1$4/5$ times the average speed of a bus. A tractor covers 575 km in 23 hours. How much distance will the car cover in 4 hours if the speed of the bus is twice speed of the tractor ?
Answer: (b)
Average speed of a tractor = ${575}/23$ = 25km/h
The speed of a bus in an hour = 25 × 2 = 50 km
The speed of a car in an hour = 50 × $9/5$ = 90km
So, the distance covered by car in 4 h is
90 × 4 = 360 km
A motor car does a journey in 10 hours, the first half at 21 km per hour, and the rest at 24 km per hour. Find the distance.
Answer: (c)
Let the distance be x km. Then,
total time = $x/{2 × 21} + x/{2 × 24}$ = 10hrs.
or, ${x(24 + 21)}/{2 × 21 × 24} = 10 ∴ x = {10 × 2 × 21 × 24}/45$ = 224km
A bike covers a certain distance at the speed of 64 km/h in 8 hours. If the bike was to cover the same distance in approximately 6 hours, at what approximate speed should the bike travel ?
Answer: (a)
Total distance = 64 × 8 = 512 km
Now speed = ${512}/6$ = 85km/h
