time and distance Model Questions & Answers, Practice Test for ssc mts paper 1 2023

Question :1

A 300 meter long train moving with an average speed of 126 km/hr crosses a platform in 24 seconds. A man crosses the same platform in 5 minutes. What is the speed of the man in meters/second

Answer: (c)

Length of platform

= $126×5/18×24–300$ = 540 meter

∴ Speed of man = $540/{5×60}$

= 1.8 meter/second

Question :2

The ratio between the speed of a train and a car is 16 : 15 respectively. Also, a bus covered a distance of 480 km in 8 h. The speed of the bus is three-fourth the speed of the train. How much distance will the car cover in 6 h?

Answer: (c)

Speed of bus = ${480}/8$ = 60km/h

Speed of train = ${60 × 4}/3$ = 80 km/h

Speed of train : Speed of car = 16 : 15

∴ Speed of car = ${80}/{16}$ × 15 = 75 km/h

Distance covered by car in 6 h r = 75 × 6 = 450 km

Question :3

Car A runs at the speed of 65 km/h and reaches its destination in 8h. Car B runs at the speed of 70 km/h and reaches its destination in 4h. What is the respective ratio of distances covered by Car A and Car B ?

Answer: (b)

Distance travelled by Car A = 65 × 8 = 520 km

Distance travelled by Car B = 70 × 4 = 280 km

Ratio = ${520}/{280}$ = 13 : 7

Question :4

Two men start together to walk a certain distance, one at 3 $3/4$ km an hour and the other at 3 km an hour. The former arrives half an hour before the latter. Find the distance.

Answer: (a)

Distance = ${\text"Time difference" × S_1 × S_2}/{S_1 - S_2}$

Where, $S_1 and S_2$ are the speeds of the two persons.

∴ distance = ${{1/2} × 3 × {15}/{4}}/{{{15}/4}-3} = {15}/2$ = 7.5km

Question :5

Subbu starts from a point O at 10:00 a.m., overtakes Ajay, who is moving in the same direction, at 11:00 a.m. and Bhuvan moving in the opposite direction at 12:00 (noon). If the speed of Bhuvan is one fourth the speed of Subbu, at what time will Ajay and Bhuvan cross each other ?

Answer: (d)

Let the speed of Ajay be V and the speed of Bhuvan and Subbu be 1 and 4 respectively.

Then OA = 4 and OB = 4.

At 12:00 noon.

Let Ajay be at C at 12:00 noon at a distance of V from A (towards B)

∴Time taken for them to meet from 12:00 noon.

= ${4-V}/{1+V}$

Since V is not known ${4-V}/{1+V}$ cannot be determined.
