In each of the following sentences, a part of the sentence has been italicised. Below are given alternatives to the part italicised which may improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative and wherever no improvement is needed, choose 'No correction required' or 'No Improvement' as the answer.

Answer: (a)

With 'many a', a singular verb is used.

Question :17

The teacher gave the students some advice.

Answer: (d)

'Advice' as a noun is spelt so; as a verb it is 'advise'. Advices (pl.) means 'communications from a distance'. In American English, 'advise' is the spelling used for both the noun and the verb.

Question :18

He has cooked that meal so often he can do it with his eyes closed.

Answer: (d)

To be able to do something with the eyes closed is to be able to do something with expertise offhand or while not being focussed totally on it. This is different from 'closing one's eyes' which is a euphemism for dying and 'close one's eyes to' meaning to ignore or disregard purposely.

Young men and women should get habituated to reading and writing about current affairs.

Answer: (b)

'Used' is the best possible option here. 'Habituated' is 'accustomed to'. One cannot get accustomed to reading and writing, nor get trained in it.

Answer: (a)

'Accordance' means agreement or conformity. So 'with' is preferable to 'to'.
