Question : 12
Consider the following statements:
- Our solar system is located in the orion arm of the Milky way galaxy, about two-third of the way out from the centre.
- The solar system formed from an interstellar cloud of dust and gas or nebulla about 4.6 billion years ago.
a) Both 1 and 2
b) Neither 1 nor 2
c) 2 only
d) 1 only
Answer »Answer: (a)
Our solar system is located in the Orion arm of the milky way galaxy, about two-thirds of the way out from the center.
The sun is about 26,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is about 80,000 to 120,000 light-years across (and less than 7,000 light-years thick). We are located on one of its spiral arms, out towards the edge.
It takes the sun (and our solar system) roughly 200-250 million years to orbit once around the Milky Way. In this orbit, we (and the rest of the Solar System) are traveling at a velocity of about 155 miles/sec (250 km/sec).

Question : 14
The Earth’s surface receives maximum energy at 12 noon but the maximum temperature never occurs at 12 noon. State which of the following reasons are correct?
- Transformation of solar energy into heat requires some time.
- The loss of energy through long-wave radiations from the Earth’s surface exceeds the energy received from the Sun at 4:00 p.m.
- Energy received by the Earth from solar radiations continues to exceed the energy lost by outgoing long-wave radiations from the Earth’s surface up to 4:00 p.m.
a) 1 and 3 only
b) 1, 2 and 3
c) 2 and 3 only
d) 1 and 2 only
Answer »Answer: (a)

Question : 15 [SSC CGL 2016]
The outermost layer of the sun is called
a) Photosphere
b) Corona
c) Chromosphere
d) Lithosphere
Answer »Answer: (b)
The corona is the outermost layer of the Sun, starting at about 1300 miles (2100 km) above the solar surface (the photosphere).
The temperature in the corona is 500,000 K (900,000 degrees F, 500,000 degrees C) or more, up to a few million K. The corona cannot be seen with the naked eye except during a total solar eclipse.
The corona does not have an upper limit.
