The following question based on trains topic of quantitative aptitude
(a) 37.5 km/hour
(b) 37.6 km/hour
(c) 39.6 km/hour
(d) 46.5 km/hour
The correct answers to the above question in:
Answer: (c)
Using Rule 10,
Let the length of the train be x
According to the question,
${x + 122}/17 = {x + 210}/25$
25x + 3050 = 17x + 3570
25x - 17x = 3570 - 3050
8x = 520 ⇒ x = $520/8$ = 65 metres
Speed of the train
= ${65 + 122}/17 = 187/17$ metre/second
= 11 metre/second
= ${11 × 18}/5$ kmph = 39.6 kmph

Question : 1
A train, 200 metre long, is running at a speed of 54 km/hr. The time in seconds that will be taken by train to cross a 175 metre long bridge is :
a) 20
b) 25
c) 10
d) 12.5
Answer »Answer: (b)
Speed of train = 54 kmph
= $({54 × 5}/18)$ m/sec.
= 15 m/sec.
Required time
= $\text"Length of train and bridge"/ \text" Speed of train"$
= $({200 + 175}/15)$ seconds
= $(375/15)$ seconds = 25 seconds
Question : 2
A train is moving at a speed of 132 km/hour. If the length of the train is 110 metres, how long will it take to cross a railway platform 165 metres long?
a) 7.5 seconds
b) 10 seconds
c) 15 seconds
d) 5 seconds
Answer »Answer: (a)
When a train crosses a railway platform, it travels a distance equal to sum of length of platform and its own length.
Speed = 132 kmph
= $132 × 5/18 = 110/3$ m/sec.
Required time
= ${110 + 165}/{110/3}$ seconds
= ${275 × 3}/110 = 7.5$ seconds
Using Rule 10,
Here, x = 110m, u = 132 km/hr.
= $132 × 5/18 = 110/3$ m/sec
y = 165m, t = ?
using t = ${x + y}/u$
t = ${110 + 165}/{110/3}$
= ${275 × 3}/110 = {25 × 3}/10$
= $15/2$ = 7.5 sec
Question : 3
The length of a train and that of a platform are equal. If with a speed of 90 km/hr the train crosses the platform in one minute, then the length of the train (in metres) is :
a) 600
b) 750
c) 900
d) 500
Answer »Answer: (b)
Using Rule 1,If a train crosses an electric pole, a sitting/standing man, km or mile stone etc. then distance = Length of train. Then,Length of train = Speed × TimeAnd Time = $\text"Length of train"/\text"Speed"$ andSpeed = $\text"Length of train"/\text"Time"$
Let the length of train be x metre Speed = 90 km/hr
= ${90 × 5}/18$ metre /sec. = 25 metre/sec.
Distance covered in 60 sec.
= 25 × 60 = 1500 metres
Now, according to question,
2x = 1500 ⇒ x = 750 metre
Question : 4
A train travelling at a speed of 30 m/sec crosses a platform, 600 metres long, in 30 seconds. The length (in metres) of train is
a) 150
b) 200
c) 300
d) 120
Answer »Answer: (c)
Using Rule 10,
Let the length of train be x
According to the question,
${x + 600}/30$ = 30
x + 600 = 900
x = 900 - 600 = 300 m
Question : 5
A 120 metre long train is running at a speed of 90 km per hour. It will cross a railway platform 230 m long in :
a) 9$1/5$ seconds
b) 7 seconds
c) 14 seconds
d) 4$4/5$ seconds
Answer »Answer: (c)
Using Rule 10,
Speed of train = 90 kmph
= $90 × 5/18$ = 25 m/sec
Distance covered
= 230 + 120 = 350 m
Time taken = $350/25$
= 14 seconds
Question : 6
A train, 110m long , is running at a speed of 60km/hr. How many seconds does it take to cross another train, 170 m long, standing on parallel track ?
a) 16.8 sec
b) 17.2 sec
c) 18 sec
d) 15.6 sec
Answer »Answer: (a)
Speed of train
= $\text"Sum of length of both trains"/ \text"Time taken"$
${60 × 5}/18 = {110 + 170}/t = 280/t$
t = ${280 × 18}/{60 × 5}$ = 16.8 seconds.
