Questions : A train 300 metres long is running at a speed of 25 metres per second. It will cross a bridge of 200 metres in

(a) 10 seconds

(b) 20 seconds

(c) 25 seconds

(d) 5 seconds

The correct answers to the above question in:

Answer: (b)

In crossing the bridge, the train travels its own length plus the length of the bridge.

Total distance (length)

= 300 + 200 = 500 m.

Speed = 25m/sec.

The required time

= 500 ÷ 25 = 20 seconds

Using Rule 10,
If a train of length x m crosses a platform/tunnel/bridge of length y m with the speed u m/s in t seconds, then,
t = ${x + y}/u$

Here, x = 300m, y= 200m, t = ? u= 25 m/sec

t = ${x + y}/u$

= ${300 + 200}/25$

t = $500/25$ = 20 seconds

Question : 1

A train passes two bridges of lengths 500 m and 250 m in 100 seconds and 60 seconds respectively. The length of the train is :

a) 125 m

b) 250 m

c) 120 m

d) 152 m

Answer: (a)

Using Rule 10,

Length of train = x metre (let)

Speed of train

= $\text"Length of train and bridge"/ \text"Time taken in crossing"$

${x + 500}/100 = {x + 250}/60$

${x + 500}/5 = {x + 250}/3$

5x + 1250 = 3x + 1500

5x - 3x = 1500 - 1250

2x = 250 ⇒ x = $250/2$ = 125 metre

Question : 2

A train, 110m long , is running at a speed of 60km/hr. How many seconds does it take to cross another train, 170 m long, standing on parallel track ?

a) 16.8 sec

b) 17.2 sec

c) 18 sec

d) 15.6 sec

Answer: (a)

Speed of train

= $\text"Sum of length of both trains"/ \text"Time taken"$

${60 × 5}/18 = {110 + 170}/t = 280/t$

t = ${280 × 18}/{60 × 5}$ = 16.8 seconds.

Question : 3

A 120 metre long train is running at a speed of 90 km per hour. It will cross a railway platform 230 m long in :

a) 9$1/5$ seconds

b) 7 seconds

c) 14 seconds

d) 4$4/5$ seconds

Answer: (c)

Using Rule 10,

Speed of train = 90 kmph

= $90 × 5/18$ = 25 m/sec

Distance covered

= 230 + 120 = 350 m

Time taken = $350/25$

= 14 seconds

Question : 4

A train 200 m long running at 36 kmph takes 55 seconds to cross a bridge. The length of the bridge is

a) 300 m.

b) 350 m.

c) 325 m.

d) 375 m.

Answer: (b)

Speed of train = 36kmph

= $36 × 5/18$ = 10 m/sec.

If the length of bridge be x metre, then

10 = ${200 + x}/55$

200 + x = 550

x = 550 - 200 = 350 metre.

Using Rule 10,

Here, x = 200 m

u = 36 km/hr, ${36 × 5}/18$ m/second

= 10 m/sec

y = ?, t = 55 sec

using t = ${x + y}/u$

55 = ${200 + y}/10$

y = 550 - 200 = 350 m

Question : 5

A train 50 metre long passes a platform 100 metre long in 10 seconds. The speed of the train in km/hr is

a) 54

b) 15

c) 100

d) 10

Answer: (a)

Using Rule 10,

Speed of train

= $\text"Length of platform and train"/ \text"Time taken incrossing"$

= $({100 + 50}/10)$ metre/second

= 15 metre/second

= $(15 × 18/5)$ kmph = 54 kmph

Question : 6

A train 150 metre long takes 20 seconds to cross a platform 450 metre long. The speed of the train in, km per hour, is :

a) 100

b) 106

c) 104

d) 108

Answer: (d)

Speed of train

= $\text"length of platform and train"/ \text"Time taken in crossing"$

=$({450 +150}/20)$ m/sec.

= $(600/20)$ m/sec.

= $(30 × 18/5)$ kmph = 108 kmph.
