Questions : A train covers a distance of 10 km in 12 minutes. If its speed is decreased by 5 km/hr, the time taken by it to cover the same distance will be :

(a) 11 minutes 20 sec

(c) 13 minutes 20 sec

(d) 10 minutes

The correct answers to the above question in:

Answer: (b)

Using Rule 1,

Speed of train = $\text"Distance"/ \text"Time"$

= $10/{12/60}$ kmph = ${10 × 60}/12 = 50$ kmph

New speed = 45 kmph

Required time = $10/45$ hour

= $2/9 × 60$ minutes = $40/3$ minutes

= 13 minutes 20 seconds

Using Rule 1,

Speed of the man = 5km/hr

= $5 × 1000/60$ m/min = $250/3$ m/min

Time taken to cross the bridge

= 15 minutes

Length of the bridge

= speed × time

= $250/3 × 15$m = 1250m

A car goes 10 metres in a second. Find its speed in km/hour.

Using Rule 1,

Speed of car = 10 m/sec.

Required speed in kmph

=${10 × 18}/5 = 36$ km/hr

A train is moving with the speed of 180 km/hr. Its speed (in metres per second) is :

d) 5

Using Rule 1,

Speed = 180 kmph

= ${180 × 5}/18$ m/sec = 50 m/sec

The speed of a bus is 72 km/hr. The distance covered by the bus in 5 seconds is

b) 50 m

Answer: (d)

Using Rule 1,

Speed of bus = 72 kmph

= $({72 × 5}/18)$ metre/second

= 20 metre/second

∴ Required distance

= 20 × 5 = 100 metre

An aeroplane covers a certain distance at a speed of 240 km hour in 5 hours. To cover the same distance in 1$2/3$ hours, it must travel at a speed of :

a) 720 km./hr.

b) 600 km./hr.

c) 360 km./hr.

d) 300 km./hr.

Answer: (a)

Using Rule 1,

Let the required speed is x km/ hr

Then, $240 × 5 = 5/3 × x$

x = 720 km/hr.
