Type 3: Symbolically Coded Relation based Blood Relationship Questions
In this type of questions certain symbols and codes such as +, -, x, ÷, @, #, $, %, Ω, α, € etc., are used to represent the information in coded form. You are required to decode the information with the help of symbols to be used for making family diagram and then find out the relationship between the persons asked in the question, this is more sufficient to find the required answer.

How to draw a family tree for symbolically coded based blood relations?
There are some simple conditions to solve this type of coded relationship, as follows
- First you have to decode the given information and then apply them to the regular steps to draw the family tree.
- You have to know all the basic relationships can be formed in a family.
- Know the basic symbols, notations, and combined symbols with meaning used in solving blood relation.
- Approach with small information, read the question carefully and divide the given information into smaller parts and draw individual relation diagrams (i.e., keep as much as small diagram showing a relation of minimum of two individuals).
- Then combine those individual diagrams by linking from the common person found between the diagrams.
Expression 1: A & B are couples
Expression 2: C is son of B
Expression 3: Adding both expression 1 & 2, we get new expression 3 as final family tree.
- After finalizing the full family tree given in the information, read the question once again and find what is asked mainly and then now see the family tree (or) compare those individuals in the figure and find the relation.
Some example questions with coded for to draw family tree diagram;
Example 1:P + Q means P is the daughter of Q; P - Q means P is the wife of Q; P X Q means P is the sister of Q; P ÷ Q means P is the father of Q. How 'M' is related to 'Q' in M - N ÷ Q?
Solution:
Here, (i) P + Q ⇒
(ii) P - Q ⇒
(iii) P X Q ⇒
(iv) P ÷ Q ⇒
Now, applying the above information in the question asked. Given equation M - N ÷ Q
Now, M - N ⇒
and N ÷ D ⇒
Now, combining the above diagrams, we have
It is clear from the above diagram that M is the mother of Q
Directions (EX 2 & 3) Following questions are based on the below information.
(i) ‘X # Y’ means ‘X is the father of Y’.
(ii) ‘X @ Y’ means ‘X is the sister of Y’.
(iii) ‘X $ Y’ means ‘X is the mother of Y’.
(iv) ‘X % Y’ means ‘X is the brother of Y’.
In which of the following represents ‘J is the son of S’?
(a) J % A @ F # S
(b) J $ A @ F # S
(c) J % K @ D # S
(d) Cannot be determined
(e) None of these
Solutions:
From option (a), J % A @ F # S
From option (b), J $ A @ F # S
So, initially it is proved that J is female, since j is the mother of A, So, J cannot be a son of S.
None of the options shows that J is son of S
Example 3:
In the expression A $ B # C % D, how is C related to A?
(a) Son
(b) Grandson
(c) Father
(d) Granddaughter
(e) None of the above
Solutions:
Option (c) A $ B # C % D
So, C is grandson of A.
Example 4:
Which of the following represents 'R is neice of M'?
(a) M ÷ K X T - R
(b) M - J + R - N
(c) R - M X T ÷ W
(d) Cannot be dtermined
(e) None of the above
Solutions:
Option (a) does not clarify the gender of R.
Hence, it is not possible.
Now, option (b) M - J + R - N
So, R is niee of M.
In order to solve these questions one should have an adequate knowledge of 'blood relations'.
