Question :26

In a group of persons, 70% of the persons are male and 30% of the persons are married. If two-sevenths of the males are married, what fraction of the females is single ?

Answer: (d)

Let the no. of total persons = 100

No. of male = 70% = $100 × 70/100 = 70$

∴ No. of female = 100 – 70 = 30

Total married person = 30 % = $30/100 × 100$ = 30

∴ Total unmarried person = 100 – 30 =70

married male = $70 × 2/7$ = 20

∴ married female = 30 – 20 = 10

Now, unmarried female = 30 – 10 = 20

∴ Required fraction = $20/30 = 2/3$

Question :27

Wheat is now being sold at Rs. 27 per kg. During last month its cost was Rs. 24 per kg. Find by how much per cent a family reduces its consumption so as to keep the expenditure fixed.

Answer: (d)

Let the family consumes 1 kg wheat

To keep expenditure at Rs. 24, its new consumption should be $24/27 = 8/9$kg

Percentage decrease in consumption

= $(1- 8/9)/1 × 100$ = 11.1%

Alternative method :

Required % = ${27 – 24}/27 × 100$ = 11.1%

Question :28

Mr. X, a businessman had the income in the year 2000, such that he earned a profit of 20% on his investment in the business. In the year 2001, his investment was less by Rs.5000 but still had the same income (Income=Investment + Profit) as that in 2000. Thus, the percent profit earned in 2001 increased by 6%. What was his investment in 2000 ?

Answer: (a)

Let his investment in the year 2000 be Rs. x.

Then, income in 2000 = Rs. [x + 20% of x] = Rs. $120/100 x$

Income in 2001 = Rs. $[126/100 (x - 5000)]$.

Now, $120/100x = 126/100 (x - 5000)$

120x = 126(x - 5000)

⇒6x = 630000

x = 105000.

Question :29

The length of a rectangular plot is increased by 25%. To keep its area unchanged, the width of the plot should be :

Answer: (d)

Let the original length and breadth be both 10 cm each.

Then original area = 100 $cm^2$

New length = 10 × 1.25 = 12.5 cm

Let new breadth be x.

Then, 12.5x = 100

⇒ $x = 100/12.5$ = 8cm

Hence, % reduction in breadth

= $2/10 × 100$ = 20 %

Question :30

In a mixture of milk and water the proportion of water by weight was 75%. If in the 60 gm mixture, 15 gm water was added, what would be the percentage of water ?

Answer: (e)

Weight of water in the mixture of 60 g water

= $60 × 75/100$ = 45g

weight of water in the mixture of 45 g water

= 45 + 15 = 60 g

∴ Percentage of water = ${60 × 100}/75$ = 80%
