Question :16

The term 'rare earths' is in fact a ________ for, paradoxically, the rare-earth elements are in actuality ________, being present in low concentration in virtually all minerals.

Answer: (a)

A 'misnomer' is a misapplied or inappropriate term. 'Ubiquitous' (adj.) means existing or being everywhere. A 'disclaimer' refers to the act of disclaiming or denying a claim and a 'truism' is a self-evident obvious truth. None of the options except (b) suits both the blanks of the statement.

Question :17

Doctors and lawyers ________ that advertising will certainly ________ their profession adversely.

Answer: (a)

'Believe' is best suited for the first blank— more than 'trust' which carries the meaning of 'reliance' or 'contemplate' which means 'observe thoughtfully'. 'Damage' in option (c) is too strong a word to be used; use of 'boost' in the second blank will be contrary to the meaning conveyed by the sentence. Though 'argue' of (b) will fit the first blank, 'effect' (n.) cannot be used in the second blank.

Question :18

Though 'attack', 'raid' and 'bombardment' will all suit the first blank, only 'panic' will suit the second blank.
