In each of the following sentences, a part of the sentence has been italicised. Below are given alternatives to the part italicised which may improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative and wherever no improvement is needed choose 'No correction required' or 'No improvement' as the answer.

A lot depends on your early brought up in the family.

Answer: (b)

'Upbringing (n) means 'bringing up' or 'rearing'. It will suit the context better than 'bringing up' meaning 'causing to rise'.

Question :12

In the modern world, it is difficult to live through one's ideals.

Answer: (c)

'Live up to' is 'to behave so as to satisfy or represent ideals, standards, etc.' 'Live for' means 'to attach great importance to something or someone'. 'Live by' something is to order one's life according to a principle, rule, code of conduct. 'Living through' is 'to experience at first hand and survive'.

Question :13

It is unreasonable to distort the statement of a man simply because he does not agree with your opinions.

Answer: (a)

'Denounce' is to accuse publicly or condemn. 'Distort' means to misrepresent, alter or pervert—which does not seem appropriate in the given sentence.

Question :14

Scarcely had he entered the room than the phone rang.

Answer: (c)

With 'scarcely', you always have 'when'. Remember those conjunctions that always go in pairs.

Question :15

Mrs. Johnson had staying here since 1954 and has made India her home.

Answer: (d)

The word 'since' necessitates use of a past participle. 'Has stayed' will suit the sentence perfectly, but it is not an option. 'Has been staying' is the right option.
