Question :6

Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 5 and 6 hours, respectively. Pipe C can empty it in 12 hours. The tank is half full. All the three pipes are in operation simultaneously. After how much time, the tank will be full ?

Answer: (d)

Part of the tank filled by the three pipes working simultaneously in one hour is = $1/5 + 1/6 - 1/{12} = {17}/60$

i.e. it takes ${60}/{17}$ hours to fill up the tank completely.

Now, $1/2$ of the tank is filled with all the pipes open, simultaneously together in ${60}/{17} × 1/2 = 1{13}/{17}$hours

Question :7

Two trains are running at 40 km/h and 20 km/h respectively in the same direction. Fast train completely passes a man sitting in the slower train in 5 seconds. What is the length of the fast train ?

Answer: (d)

Relative speed = (40 – 20) km/h

= $(20 × 5/{18})$ m/sec = $({50}/9)$ m/sec.

Length of faster train = $({50}/9 × 5)m = {250}/9 m = 27 {7/9}$m.

Question :8

24 men working 8 hours a day can finish a work in 10 days. Working at the rate of 10 hours a day, the number of men required to finish the same work in 6 days is :

Answer: (c)

$m_1 × d_1 × t_1 = m_2 × d_2 × t_2$

24 × 10 × 8 = $m_2$ × 6 × 10

⇒ $m_2 = {24 × 10 × 8}/{6 × 10}$ = 32 men

Question :9

Two workers 'A' and 'B' working together completed a job in 5 days. Had 'A' worked twice as efficiently as he actually did and 'B' worked one-third as efficiently as he actually did, the work would have completed in 3 days. In how many days could 'A' alone complete the job?

Answer: (d)

Let A and B complete the work in x and y days, then,

$1/x + 1/y = 1/5$ ...(i)

and, $2/x + 1/{3y} = 1/3$ ...(ii)

From equation (i) and (ii), we have

$1/{3x} - 2/x = 1/{15} - 1/3⇒{1 - 6}/{3x} = {1 - 5}/{15} ; x = {25}/4 = 6 1/4$ = days

Question :10

Amit starts from a point A and walks to another point B, and then returns from B to A by his car and thus takes a total time of 6 hours and 45 minutes. If he had driven both ways in his car, he would have taken 2 hours less. How long would it take for him to walk both ways?

Answer: (d)

Let C be the time taken by the car and W by walking along one way.

Now, C + W = 6 hr 45 min.

Multiplying both sides by 2,

2C + 2W = 13 hr 30 min.

2W = 13 hr 30 min – 2 C ...(i)

Now, 2C = 6 hr 45 min – 2 = 4 hr 45 min ...(ii)

Putting value of 2C in (1),

2W = 13 hr 30 min – 4 hr 45 min = 8 hr 45 min
