Question :11

Average weight of 19 men is 74 kgs, and the average weight of 38 women is 63 kgs. What is the average weight (rounded off to the nearest integer) of all the men and the women together?

Answer: (d)

Avg. wt. of man & women

= ${19 × 74 + 38 × 63}/{19 + 38}$

= $3800/51$ = 66.67 ~ 67.

Question :12

What is the average of the following set of numbers? 38] 92] 45] 25 60

Answer: (e)

Average = ${38 + 92 + 45 + 25 + 60}/5$ = 52

Question :13

The ratio between the school ages of Neelam and Shaan is 5 : 6 respectively. If the ratio between the one-third age of Neelam and half of Shaan’s age is 5 : 9, then what is the school age of Shaan?

Answer: (c)

Let the school ages of Neelam and Shaan be 5x and 6x respectively. Then,

${1/3 × 5x}/{1/2 × 6x} = 5/9$

⇔ $(1/3 × 9 × 5x) = (5/2 × 6x)$ ⇔ 15 = 15.

Thus, Shaan's age cannot be determined.

Question :14

A curious student of Statistics calculated the average height of all the students of his class as A. He also calculated the average of the average heights of all the possible pairs of students (two students taken at a time) as B. Further, he calculated the average of the average heights of all the possible triplets of students (three students taken at a time) as C. Which of the following is true of the relationship among A, B and C?

Answer: (d)

Let the height of four students be 150, 160, 170, 180 cm then

A = ${150 + 160 + 170 + 180}/4 = 660/4$ = 165cm

B = ${{150 + 160}/2 + {160 + 170}/2 + {170 + 180}/2 + {150 + 180}/2 + {150 + 170}/2 + {160 + 180}/2}/6$

= ${155 + 165 + 175 + 165 + 160 + 170}/6 = 990/6$ = 175cm

= $670/4$ = 167.5

Similarly, C = 167.5

Now going through the options.

Question :15

Average weight of 19 men is 74 kgs, and the average weight of 38 women is 63 kgs. What is the average weight (rounded off to the nearest integer) of all the men and the women together ?

Answer: (d)

Average weight of 19 men = 74 kgs

Total weight of 19 men = 74 × 19 = 1406 kgs

Average weight of 38 women = 63

Total weight of 38 women = 38 × 63 = 2394

Average weight of men and women together

= ${2394 + 1406}/{38 + 19}= 3800/57$ = 66.66 ≈ 67 kgs.
