The population of a village increases by 20% in one year and decrease by 20% by the next year. If at the beginning of the third year, the population is 5184, what was the population in the first year?
Answer: (b)
Change in population at beginning of third year
= $x + y + {xy}/100$
= $20 - 20 + {(20) × (- 20)}/100 = - 4%$
Let Initial population = x
Now, $x × (100 - 4)/100 = 5184$
$x = {5184 × 100}/96$ = 5400.
In some quantity of ghee, 60% is pure ghee and 40% is vanaspati. If 10 kg of pure ghee is added, then the strength of vanaspati ghee becomes 20%. The original quantity was :

Let the original quantity be x kg. Vanaspati ghee in
x kg = $(40/100 x)$ kg = $({2x}/5)$ kg.
Now, ${{2x}/5}/{x + 10} = 20/100 ⇔ {2x}/{5x + 50} = 1/5 ⇔ 5x = 50 ⇔ x = 10$
There are 1225 employees in an organization, out of which 40% got transferred to different places. How many such employees got transferred ?

Number of transferred employees
= 40% of 1225 = ${1225 × 40}/100$ = 490
Last year there were 610 boys in a school. The number decreased by 20 percent this year. How many girls are there in the school if the number of girls is 175 percent of the total number of boys in the school this year ?
Answer: (b)
No. of boys, last year = 610
20% of 610 = 122
No. of boys, current year = 610 – 122 = 488
No. of girls = 175% of 488
= ${175 × 488}/100$ = 854 girls
Madan pays income tax at the rate of 10%. If his income increased by 10% and his tax rate increases to 15%. his net income would increase by Rs. 350. What is Madan's income ?
Answer: (a)
Let Madan's income be Rs. x.
Then, Net income = (100 – 10)% of Rs. x
= 90% of Rs. x = Rs. ${9x}/10$.
New net income = 85% of 110% of Rs. x
= Rs. $(85/100 × 110/100 × x)$ = Rs. $187/200$ x
${187x}/200 - {9x}/10 = 350$
${7x}/200$ = 350
$x = ({350 × 200}/7)$ = 10000.
