The following question based on Universe, solar system and Astronomy topic of indian geography mcq
List I | List II |
(Era) | (Epoch) |
A. Palaeozoic | 1. Jurassic |
B. Mesozoic | 2. Archean |
C. Pre Cambrian | 3. Oligocene |
D. Cainozoic | 4. Silurian |
(a) 1 4 3 2
(b) 4 1 3 2
(c) 4 1 2 3
(d) 1 4 2 3
The correct answers to the above question in:
Answer: (c)
- Palaeozoic – Silurian (The Silurian is a geologic period and system spanning 24.6 million years from the end of the Ordovician Period, at 443.8 million years ago (Mya), to the beginning of the Devonian Period, 419.2 Mya. As with other geologic periods, the rock beds that define the period’s start and end are well identified, but the exact dates are uncertain by several million years. The base of the Silurian is set at a major Ordovician-Silurian extinction event when 60% of marine species were wiped out.
- Mesozoic – Jurassic (The dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago. The Mesozoic Era lasted about 180 million years and is divided into three periods, the Triassic, the Jurassic, and the Cretaceous. Each of these periods is divided into many epochs and ages. Mesozoic means “Middle Animal” and is sometimes called the age of reptiles.)
- Pre Cambrian – Archean (The Precambrian (or Pre-Cambrian, sometimes abbreviated p?) is the earliest period of Earth’s history, set before the current Phanerozoic Eon. The Precambrian (coloured green on the right) is a supereon that is subdivided into three aeons (Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic) of the geologic time scale.)
- Cainozoic – Oligocene (The Cainozoic (Cenozoic) is the current geological era. It began 66 million years ago and continues today. Before it was the Mesozoic. During the Cainozoic, the continents moved into their present positions.)

Question : 1
The different phases of the moon are caused by
a) changing angle of sun
b) none of these
c) changing angle of sunlight hitting the moon
d) changing angle of earth with respect to moon
Answer »Answer: (d)
The different phases of the moon are caused by changing the angle of the earth with respect to moon. The moon’s phases are a result of the moon’s orbit around the earth as it reflects the sun’s light.
The lunar phases vary cyclically as the Moon orbits the Earth, according to the changing relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
Question : 2
The ring of Jupiter is composed of
a) Very thick and opaque
b) All of the above
c) Non-existent
d) Silicates
Answer »Answer: (d)
Question : 3
Which of the following statements in regard to the galaxy is correct?
a) A galaxy is a huge system of billions of stars and clouds of dust and gases
b) A galaxy does not have a sun
c) Galaxy is found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter
d) Numerous tiny bodies that move around the sun are called galaxies
Answer »Answer: (a)
A galaxy is a huge system of billions of stars and clouds of dust and gases.
Question : 4
The mean radius of the Earth is
a) 8400 km
b) 12800 km
c) 6400 km
d) 3200 km
Answer »Answer: (c)
Question : 5
Solar energy is received by the earth through
a) convection
b) refraction
c) radiation
d) conduction
Answer »Answer: (c)
In physics, radiation is a process in which energetic particles or energetic waves travel through a vacuum, or through matter-containing media that are not required for their propagation. The Earth receives 174 petawatts (PW) of incoming solar radiation (insolation) at the upper atmosphere.
Question : 6
There are two statements, one labelled as the Assertion (A) and other as Reason (R). Examine these two statements carefully and select the correct answer by using the codes given below:
Assertion (A):
According to the Nova hypothesis, Solar planets were formed because of the explosion of Super Nova.
Reason (R):
A star becomes Super Nova in that stage when it has lacks hydrogen element.
Codes:
a) A is true, but R is false.
b) A is false, but R is true.
c) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
d) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Answer »Answer: (c)
According to the Nova hypothesis, Solar planets were formed because of the explosion of Super Nova. A star becomes Super Nova in that stage when it has lacks hydrogen elements. A supernova happens where there is a change in the core, or center, of a star.
A change can occur in two different ways, with both resulting in a supernova. The first type of supernova happens in binary star systems. Binary stars are two stars that orbit the same point. One of the stars, a carbon-oxygen white dwarf, steals matter from its companion star. Eventually, the white dwarf accumulates too much matter. Having too much matter causes the star to explode, resulting in a supernova. The second type of supernova occurs at the end of a single star’s lifetime. As the star runs out of nuclear fuel, some of its mass flows into its core.
Eventually, the core is so heavy that it cannot withstand its own gravitational force. The core collapses, which results in the giant explosion of a supernova. The sun is a single star, but it does not have enough mass to become a supernova.
