Hurricanes develop over the oceans between 8°-15° N. The term “tropical” refers to the geographical origin of these systems, which usually form over the tropical oceans.
The term “cyclone” refers to their cyclonic nature, with the wind blowing counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
The opposite direction of circulation is due to the Coriolis force. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as a hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, a tropical depression and simply cyclone.

- They are characterized by divergent wind circulation.
- They are indicative of dry weather conditions.
a) 1 and 3 only
b) 2 and 3 only
c) 1 only
d) 1, 2 and 3
Answer »Answer: (b)
An anti-cyclone is also known as a high-pressure area -- is a large atmospheric circulation system with the wind flowing clockwise around it in the Northern Hemisphere, and counter-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
Anticyclones form from air masses cooling more than their surroundings, which causes the air to contract slightly making the air denser. Since dense air weighs more, the weight of the atmosphere overlying a location increases, causing increased surface air pressure.
The air mass cooling that results in an anticyclone forming can be caused by either conduction as the air flows over a relatively cool ocean surface, or through the loss of infrared radiation over land during the fall, winter, or spring when little sunlight is available to warm the air mass.
