The first organization in the Madras Presidency to vent for the rights of Indians was the Madras Native Association which was established by Gazulu Lakshminarasu Chetty in 1849. Poona Sarvajanik Sabha was founded by MG Ranade in 1870 to represent the aspirations of the people to the government. It published a quarterly journal to put forth the problems of people before the government. Sisir Kumar Ghosh along with a group of progressive leaders founded the India League in 1875.
The league aspired to represent not only the middle classes but the masses as well and to stimulate a sense of nationalism among the people. Indian National Association was the first declared Nationalist Organization founded in British India by Surendranath Banerjee and Anand Mohan Bose in 1876.
It was originally established as Bharat Sabha and held its first annual conference in Calcutta. It merged in INC in 1885.
