What is voice explain?

Voice, also known as diathesis, is a grammatical feature that describes the relationship between the verb and the subject (also known as the agent) in a sentence. More specifically, voice describes how the verb is expressed or written concerning the agent.

Note: Voice is that form of the transitive verb that shows whether the subject of the sentence is the doer of the action or has the action done to it.

Special Rules for the Change of Voice:

  • The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the verb in the passive voice. The preposition ‘by’ is put before it.
  • The main verb of the active sentence changes into the past participle.
  • The form of the verb to be (am, is, are, was, were, being, been) is placed before the main verb according to the tense.
  • The auxiliary verb is changed according to the new subject in number and person.

What are the different types of voices?

There are two main types of voice:

  1. Active Voice
  2. Passive Voice &
  3. Middle Voice.

The third type of voice called the “middle” voice also exists but is less commonly used. Here are some examples of the three types of voice:

  • “He wrote a novel.” (active voice)
  • “The shop was purchased by an entrepreneur.” (passive voice)
  • “The dog licked itself.” (“middle” voice)

While changing a verb from Active voice to Passive voice, the following general rules should be followed

  • The object of the Active voice is made the subject of the Passive voice.
  • The subject of the Active voice is made the object of the Passive voice.
  • The Passive voice must contain the third form of the main or finite verb.
  • The form of the verb is used according to the tense.
