The following question based on time & distance topic of quantitative aptitude

Questions : A man travels 50 km at speed 25 km/h and next 40 km at 20 km/ h and there after travels 90 km at 15 km/h. His average speed is :

(a) 20 kmph.

(b) 15 kmph.

(c) 18 kmph.

(d) 25 kmph.

The correct answers to the above question in:

Answer: (c)

Total distance covered

= (50 + 40 + 90) km = 180 km

Time = $\text"Distance"/ \text"Speed"$

Total time taken

= $(50/25 + 40/20 + 90/15)$ hours

= (2 + 2 + 6) hours = 10 hours

∴ Average speed

= $\text"Total distance"/ \text"Total time taken"$

= $180/10$ = 18 kmph

Gautam travels 160 kms at 32 kmph and returns at 40 kmph. Then his average speed is

a) 36 kmph

b) 35.55 kmph

c) 72 kmph

Answer: (b)

Here, distances are equal.

Average speed = $({2xy}/{x + y})$ kmph.

= $({2 × 32 × 40}/{32 + 40})$ kmph.

= $({2 × 32 × 40}/72)$ kmph.

= $(320/9)$ kmph. = 35.55 kmph.

Question : 2

A man covers a total distance of 100 km on bicycle. For the first 2 hours, the speed was 20 km/ hr and for the rest of the journey, it came down to 10 km/hr. The average speed will be

a) 15$1/8$ km/hr

b) 20 km/hr

c) 12$1/2$ km/hr

d) 13 km/hr

Answer: (c)

Distance covered in first 2 hours

= 2 × 20 = 40 km.

Remaining distance

= 100 - 40 = 60 km.

Time taken in covering 60 km at 10 kmph

= $60/10$ = 6 hours

∴ Required average speed

= $\text"Total distance"/ \text"Total Time"$

= $(100/{2+6})$ kmph = $(100/8)$ kmph

= $25/2$ kmph = 12$1/2$ kmph

A boy rides his bicycle 10km at an average speed of 12 km/hr and again travels 12 km at an average speed of 10 km/hr. His average speed for the entire trip is approximately :

a) 11.0 km/hr

b) 12.2 km/hr

c) 10.4 km/hr

d) 10.8 km/hr

Answer: (d)

Total distance = 10 + 12 = 22 km

Total time = $10/12 + 12/10 = 244/120$ hours

Required average speed

= $\text"Total distance"/ \text"Total time"$

= $22/{244/120} = 22/244 × 120$ = 10.8 km/hr.

Using Rule 3,
If a man travels different distances $d_1,d_2,d_3$, and so on with different speeds $s_1,s_2,s_3$, respectively then,
Average speed = $({d_1 + d_2 + d_3 + ...})/{d_1/S_1 + d_2/S_2 + d_3/S_3 + ...}$

Here, $d_1 = 10, S_1 = 12, d_2 = 12, S_2$ = 10

Average Speed = ${d_1 + d_2}/{d_1/S_1 + d_2/S_2}$

= ${10 + 12}/{10/12 + 12/10} = {22 × 120}/244$ = 10.8 km/hrs.

A train runs from Howrah to Bandel at an average speed of 20 km/ hr and returns at an average speed of 30 km/hr. The average speed (in km/hr) of the train in the whole journey is

a) 24

b) 25

c) 20

d) 22.5

Answer: (a)

Using Rule 5,

Average speed = ${2xy}/{x + y}$ kmph

= ${2 × 20 × 30}/{20 + 30}$

= ${2 × 20 × 30}/50$ = 24 kmph

Question : 5

To cover a distance of 216 km in 3.2 hours, what should be the average speed of the car in metre/second?

a) 37.5 metre/second

b) 18.75 metre/second

c) 67.5 metre/second

d) 33.75 metre/second

Answer: (b)

Required speed of car

= $\text"Distance"/ \text"Time"$

= $(216/{3.2})$ kmph.

= $(216/{3.2} × 5/18)$ m./sec.

= 18.75 m./sec.

Question : 6

A person travels 600 km by train at 80km/hr, 800 km by ship at 40 km/hr 500 km by aeroplane at 400 km/hr and 100 km by car at 50km/hr. What is the average speed for the entire distance ?

a) 60$5/123$ km/hr

b) 62 km/hr

c) 65$5/123$ km/hr

d) 60 km/hr

Answer: (c)

Using Rule 3,

Total time

= $600/80 + 800/40 + 500/400 + 100/50$

= $246/8$ hours.

Average speed

= ${600 + 800 + 500 +100}/{246/8}$

= ${2000 × 8}/246 = 65{5}/123$ km/hr.
