The following question based on ratio & proportion topic of quantitative aptitude
(a) Rs.500
(b) Rs.250
(c) Rs.1000
(d) Rs.1500
The correct answers to the above question in:
Answer: (d)
Let the income of A and B be Rs.5x and Rs.3x respectively.
Let the expenses of A, B and C be Rs.8y, Rs.5y and Rs.2y respectively.
Then, 2y = 2000
$y =2000/2 = 1000$
B saves = Rs.700
3x - 5y = 700
3x - 5×1000 = 700
3x = 700 +5000 = 570
$x = 5700/3 = 1900$
A’s saving = Rs.(5x - 8y)
= Rs.(5×1900 - 8×1000)
= Rs.(9500 - 8000) = Rs.1500

Question : 1
A and B have their monthly incomes in the ratio 8 : 5, while their monthly expenditures are in the ratio 5 : 3. If they have saved Rs.12,000 and Rs.10,000 monthly respectively, then the difference in their monthly incomes is
a) Rs.44,000
b) Rs.46,000
c) Rs.42,000
d) Rs.52,000
Answer »Answer: (c)
A’s monthly income = Rs.8x
A’s monthly expenditure= Rs.5y
B’s monthly income = Rs.5x
B’s monthly expenditure= Rs.3y
According to the question,
8x - 5y = 12000 ...(i)
5x - 3y = 10000 ...(ii)
By equation (i) × 3 - (ii) × 5,
24x | - | 15y | = | 36000 |
25x | - | 15y | = | 50000 |
- | + | - | ||
-x | = | -14000 |
x = 14000
Difference between monthly incomes of
A and B = 8x - 5x
= Rs.3x = Rs.(3 × 14000) = Rs.42000
Question : 2
The ratio of income of two persons is 5 : 3 and that of their expenditures is 9 : 5. If they save Rs.2600 and Rs.1800 respectively, their incomes are :
a) Rs.10000; Rs.6000
b) Rs.9000; Rs.5400
c) Rs.6000; Rs.3600
d) Rs.8000; Rs.4800
Answer »Answer: (d)
Let the income of two persons be Rs.5x and Rs.3x respectively
and their expenditures be Rs.9y and Rs.5y respectively.
As given,
5x - 9y = 2600 ...(i)
3x - 5y = 1800 ...(ii)
By 5 × (i) - 9 × (ii) we get
25x - 27x = 13000 - 16200
- 2x = - 3200
$x = 3200/2$ = 1600
First person’s income
= Rs.(1600 × 5) = Rs.8000
Second person’s income
= 3x = Rs.(1600 × 3) = Rs.4800
Question : 3
The income of A, B and C are in the ratio 3 : 7 : 4 and their expenses in the ratio 4 : 3 : 5. If A saves Rs.300 out of an income of Rs.2,400, the savings of B and C are :
a) Rs.2750 and Rs.1.525
b) Rs.3725 and Rs.1.525
c) Rs.1575 and Rs.2.625
d) Rs.4025 and Rs.575
Answer »Answer: (d)
Let the income of A, B and C be Rs.3x, Rs.7x and Rs.4x respectively
and their expenses be Rs.4y, Rs.3y and Rs.5y respectively.
3x = 2400
x = 800
4y = 2400 - 300 = 2100
y = 525
B’s saving
= (7x - 3y)
= Rs.(7 × 800 - 3 × 525)
= Rs.(5600 - 1575) = Rs.4025
and C’s savings = Rs.(4x - 5y)
= Rs.(3200 - 2625) = Rs.575
Question : 4
The monthly income of two persons are in the ratio 2 : 3 and their monthly expenses are in the ratio 5 : 9. If each of them saves Rs.600 per month, then their monthly incomes are
a) Rs.1,600; Rs.2,400
b) Rs.1,400; Rs.2,100
c) Rs.1,200; Rs.1,800
d) Rs.1,500; Rs.2,250
Answer »Answer: (a)
Let the income of two persons (A and B) be Rs.2x and Rs.3x respectively.
Again let the expenditures of A and B be Rs.5y and Rs.9y respectively.
2x - 5y = 600 ...(i)
3x - 9y = 600 ...(ii)
From equations (i) and (ii),
2x - 5y = 3x - 9y
x = 4y
From equation (i),
2 × 4y - 5y = 600
3y = 600 ⇒ y = 200
x = 4 × 200 = 800
A’s income = 2x
= 2 × 800 = Rs.1600
B’s income = 3x
= 3 × 800 = Rs.2400
Question : 5
The ratio of monthly incomes of A, B is 6 : 5 and their monthly expenditures are in the ratio 4 : 3. If each of them saves Rs.400 per month, find the sum of their monthly incomes.
a) 2200
b) 2500
c) 2400
d) 2300
Answer »Answer: (a)
Income of A and B
= Rs.6x and 5x
Expenses of A and B
= Rs.4y and 3y
6x - 4y = 400 ...(i)
5x - 3y = 400 ...(ii)
By equation (i)× 3 - (ii) × 4
18x - 12y - 20x + 12y
= 1200 - 1600
2x = 400 ⇒ x = 200
Total income
= 6x + 5x = 11x = Rs.2200
Question : 6
A’s income is Rs.140 more than B’s income and C’s income is Rs.80 more than D’s. If the ratio of A’s and C’s incomes is 2 : 3 and the ratio of B’s and D’s incomes is 1 : 2, then the incomes of A, B, C and D are respectively
a) Rs.400, Rs.260, Rs.600 and Rs.520
b) Rs.320, Rs.180, Rs.480 and Rs.360
c) Rs.300, Rs.160, Rs.600 and Rs.520
d) Rs.260, Rs.120, Rs.320 and Rs.240
Answer »Answer: (a)
Let A‘s income be Rs.2x.
B’s income = Rs.(2x - 140)
C’s income = Rs.3x
D’s income = Rs.(3x - 80)
According to the question,
B : D = 1 : 2
2 (2x - 140) = 3x - 80
4x - 280 = 3x - 80
4x - 3x = 280 - 80
x = Rs. 200
A’s income
= Rs.(2 × 200) = Rs.400
B’s income
= Rs.(400 - 140) = Rs.260
C’s income
= Rs.(3 × 200) = Rs.600
D’s income
= Rs.(600 - 80) = Rs.520
