The ratio of income and expenditure of a person is 11 : 10. If he saves Rs.9,000 per annum, his monthly income is
a) Rs.8,500
b) Rs.8,250
c) Rs.8,800
d) Rs.8,000
Answer »Answer: (b)
Let the income of man be = Rs.11x
and his expenditure be Rs.10x.
Savings = x = Rs.9000
Monthly income of man
= ${11 × 9000}/12$ = Rs.8250
Question : 2
A’s income is Rs.140 more than B’s income and C’s income is Rs.80 more than D’s. If the ratio of A’s and C’s incomes is 2 : 3 and the ratio of B’s and D’s incomes is 1 : 2, then the incomes of A, B, C and D are respectively
a) Rs.400, Rs.260, Rs.600 and Rs.520
b) Rs.320, Rs.180, Rs.480 and Rs.360
c) Rs.300, Rs.160, Rs.600 and Rs.520
d) Rs.260, Rs.120, Rs.320 and Rs.240
Answer »Answer: (a)
Let A‘s income be Rs.2x.
B’s income = Rs.(2x - 140)
C’s income = Rs.3x
D’s income = Rs.(3x - 80)
According to the question,
B : D = 1 : 2
2 (2x - 140) = 3x - 80
4x - 280 = 3x - 80
4x - 3x = 280 - 80
x = Rs. 200
A’s income
= Rs.(2 × 200) = Rs.400
B’s income
= Rs.(400 - 140) = Rs.260
C’s income
= Rs.(3 × 200) = Rs.600
D’s income
= Rs.(600 - 80) = Rs.520
Question : 3
The ratio of monthly incomes of A, B is 6 : 5 and their monthly expenditures are in the ratio 4 : 3. If each of them saves Rs.400 per month, find the sum of their monthly incomes.
a) 2200
b) 2500
c) 2400
d) 2300
Answer »Answer: (a)
Income of A and B
= Rs.6x and 5x
Expenses of A and B
= Rs.4y and 3y
6x - 4y = 400 ...(i)
5x - 3y = 400 ...(ii)
By equation (i)× 3 - (ii) × 4
18x - 12y - 20x + 12y
= 1200 - 1600
2x = 400 ⇒ x = 200
Total income
= 6x + 5x = 11x = Rs.2200
Question : 4
A man spends a part of his monthly income and saves a part of it. The ratio of his expenditure to his saving is 26 : 3. If his monthly income is Rs.7250, what is the amount of his monthly savings ?
a) Rs.750
b) Rs.780
c) Rs.290
d) Rs.350
Answer »Answer: (a)

and savings be Rs.3x.
26x + 3x = 7250
29x = 7250
$x = 7250/29$ =250
Savings = 3x = Rs.750
Question : 5
A and B have monthly incomes in the ratio 5 : 6 and monthly expenditures in the ratio 3 : 4. If they save Rs.1800 and Rs.1600 respectively, find the monthly income of B :
a) Rs.1720
b) Rs.7200
c) Rs.2700
d) Rs.3400
Answer »Answer: (b)
Given
$\text”Monthly income of A”/ \text”Monthly income of B” = 5/6$
Monthly income of A = 5x
and that of B = 6x (x is a constant)
According to the question
${5x - 1800}/{6x - 1600} =3/4$
20x - 7200 = 18x - 4800
2x = 2400 ⇒ x = 1200
Monthly income of B
= 1200 × 6 = Rs.7200
Question : 6
The ratio of weekly income of A and B is 9 : 7 and the ratio of their expenditures is 4 : 3. If each saves Rs.200 per week, then the sum of their weekly income is
a) Rs.4,800
b) Rs.5,600
c) Rs.3,200
d) Rs.3,600
Answer »Answer: (c)
Let A’s and B’s weekly income be Rs.9x and Rs.7x
and their expenditures be Rs.4y and Rs.3y respectively.
Then, 9x - 4y = 200 ...(i)
and 7x - 3y = 200 ...(ii)
9x - 4y = 7x - 3y
9x - 7x = 4y - 3y
2x = y ...(iii)
From equation (i),
9x - 4y = 200
9x - 8x = 200
x = 200
Sum of their weekly income
= 16x = 16 × 200 = Rs.3200
