Question : 1

Is the number $M/3$ an odd integer? (You may assume that $M/3$ is an integer)
(I) M = 3K, where K is an integer.
(II) M = 6J + 3, where J is an interger.

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (b)

(1) ⇒ $M/3 = K$

∴ $M/3$ may be odd or even. Therefore it is not sufficient to answer the question.

(II) ⇒ $M/3$ = 2J + 1, which is always odd because J is an integer.

∴ Statement (II) alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Question : 2

How much is the average salary of the 30 assembly workers? The foreman is paid a salary of Rs.12,000.
(I) The total salary paid to the 30 assembly workers and the foreman is Rs.312,000
(II) The foreman's salary is 120% of the average salary of the 30 assembly workers.

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (d)

(I) ⇒ Total salary of 30 assembly workers

$T_s$ = Total salary – salary of foreman and required average = ${T_S}/{30}$

(II) ⇒ Foreman's salary = 12,000 = 120% of average salary of assembly workers

⇒ Average salary = ${12,000 × 100}/{120}$

Hence, each statement alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Question : 3

Is x greater than y?
(I) x is a multiple of y.
(II) $x/6 = y/3$

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (b)

Since the multiple may be a whole number or a fraction. Therefore, (I) is not sufficient to answer the question.

(II) ⇒ $x/6 = y/3$

which means x > y

Hence, (II) is sufficient to answer the question.

Question : 4

A train crosses a signal post in X seconds. What is the length of the train?
(I) The train crosses a platform of 100 metres in Y seconds
(II) The train is running at the speed of 80 km/hr.

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (d)

Let the length of the train be 'L' m.

Speed of the train = $L/X$

(I) ⇒ $L/X = {L + 100}/Y ⇒ L = {100X}/{Y - X}$

(II) ⇒ L = 80 × $5/{18} X = {200X}/9$

Therefore, each statement alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Question : 5

Who scored highest among A, B, C, D and E?
(I) B scored more than D, but not as much as C.
(II) E scored more than C, but not more than A.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (a)
