Question : 1

A train crosses a signal post in X seconds. What is the length of the train?
(I) The train crosses a platform of 100 metres in Y seconds
(II) The train is running at the speed of 80 km/hr.

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (d)

Let the length of the train be 'L' m.

Speed of the train = $L/X$

(I) ⇒ $L/X = {L + 100}/Y ⇒ L = {100X}/{Y - X}$

(II) ⇒ L = 80 × $5/{18} X = {200X}/9$

Therefore, each statement alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Question : 2

Is x greater than y?
(I) x is a multiple of y.
(II) $x/6 = y/3$

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (b)

Since the multiple may be a whole number or a fraction. Therefore, (I) is not sufficient to answer the question.

(II) ⇒ $x/6 = y/3$

which means x > y

Hence, (II) is sufficient to answer the question.

Question : 3

Is Bhavana five years old ?
(I) Kalpana is seven years old and is younger than Bhavana.
(II) Bhavana is two years older than Ramesh, who is six years old.

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (d)

(I) ⇒ Kalpana = 7 years < Bhavana

⇒ Bhavana ≠ 5 years

(II) ⇒ Bhavana = Ramesh + 2 = 6 + 2 = 8 years

Hence, each statement alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Question : 4

Is g – h > 0?
(I) g > h
(II) $g^2 > h^2$

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (c)

(I) ⇒ g – h > 0

∴ (I) is sufficient to answer the question.

(II) ⇒ $g^2$ is greater than $h^2$ , but g may not be greater than h. (For example, g might be –3 and h might be 2). Hence, (II) alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Question : 5

Who is paternal uncle of P ?
(I) P is brother of L, who is daughter of Q, who is sister of N, who is brother of S.
(II) M is brother of K, who is husband of L, who is mother of G, who is sister of P

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (b)

From (I) : Q (F) - N (M) - S

(daughter)

P (M) - L (F)

N is maternal uncle of P.

From (II) : (M) M - K (M) - L (F)

daughter (F)

G(F) - P

M is the paternal uncle of P

Hence we can give the answer using either statement alone.

Question : 6

N is an integer between 1 and 93. What is the value of N?
(I) N is both the square of an integer and the cube of an integer.
(II) The square root of N is divisible by 8.

a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.

b) Statement (II) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (I) alone is not sufficient.

c) Statement(I) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (II) alone is not sufficient.

d) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient

Answer: (d)

(I) ⇒ N = 64 (∵ only 64 is both the square of an integer and the cube of an integer)

∴ Statement (I) alone is sufficient to answer the question.

(II) ⇒ N = 64. ∴ Statement (II) alone is sufficient to answer the question.
