Directions:
Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered (1) and (2) given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and give answer.
The following question based on Data Sufficiency topic of verbal reasoning
(1) Sudha's present age is five times her son's present age.
(2) Five years ago her age was twenty-five times her son's age that time.
(a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
(b) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient
(c) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
(d) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
The correct answers to the above question in:
Answer: (a)
(1) ⇒ M = 5S
(2) ⇒ M – 5 = 25 (S – 5)

Question : 1
ABCD is a square. What is the value of circumference of the inner circle?
(1) The radius of the outer circle is 10 cm.
(2) The difference between the radii of the two circles is 2.929 cm.
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient
c) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
d) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
Answer »Answer: (c)
(1) ⇒ OC = 10 cm
∴ Diagonal of square = 20 cm
⇒ Side of square = ${20}/√2 = 10√2$ cm
∴ radius of the inner circle OE = ${10 √2}/2 = 5√2$ cm. Hence circumference of inner circle can be determined. Therefore, statement (1) alone is sufficient to answer the question.
(2) ⇒ It is not sufficient to answer the question.
Question : 2
Average age of 50 employees working in a departmental store is 30 years. In the next year, ten workers will retire. What will be the average age in the next year?
(1) Retirement age is sixty years.
(2) There are 100 workers in the department.
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient
c) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
d) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
Answer »Answer: (c)
Given : Sum of ages of employees = 1500
(1) ⇒ In the next year, sum of ages = 1500 – 10 × 59
and remaining employees = 50 – 10 = 40
Hence, average age in next year can be calculated.
(2) ⇒ It is insufficient to answer the question.
Question : 3
If t is a multiple of prime number S, is t a multiple of $S^2$?
(1) S < 4
(2) t = 18
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient
c) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
d) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
Answer »Answer: (a)
Given, t = nS
From (1) : The value of S will be either 3 or 2
From (2) : t = 18
Hence, we can find the answer using both the statements.
Question : 4
What is the height of a right-angled triangle ?
(1) The area of the right-angled triangle is equal to the area of a rectangle whose breadth is 12 cm.
(2) The length of the rectangle is 18 cm.
a) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement alone is sufficient.
b) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient
c) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
d) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
Answer »Answer: (d)
(1) ⇒ Area of right-angled triangle = 12 × L
(2) ⇒ L = 18 cm.
∴ Using (1) and (2) we can only calculate the area of right-angled triangle. Since we don't know the base of triangle, the height cannot be calculated.
