Directions:
In each of the following questions, a series of letters and numbers is given, the terms of which follow certain definite pattern in groups. However, some terms in the series are missing, which are given in the same order as one of the alternatives below the series. Choose the correct alternative.

[B.T.M. 2005]

Question : 1

2 3 B _ 6 _ F G _ 5 _ D _ 8 _ H I

a) C, 7, 4, E, 9

b) D, 8, 6, C, 7

c) E, 8, 7, D, 9

d) W, 8, 7, I, 6

Answer: (a)

From the alternatives, it is clear that the series can be divided into groups of 4 terms each _ each group comprising of two numbers followed by two letters, as shown below:

2 3 B _ / 6 _ F G / _ 5 D _ / 8 _ H I

Clearly, the first number in each group represents the position of the letter in the third place, in the English alphabet.

Thus, the third missing term is the number corresponding to the position of D in the English alphabet

i.e. 4, which is given in (a).

Substituting other terms of (a) into the series, we get

2 3 B C / 6 7 F G / 4 5 D E / 8 9 H I

Observe that the second number in each group represents the position of the letter in the fourth place, in the English alphabet.

Question : 2

Z _ 25 _ Y B 23 X C _ W _ 19 _ E 17

a) A, 21, D, V

b) A, 27, C, V

c) X, 21, C, W

d) X, 27, F, W

Answer: (a)

From the alternatives, it is clear that the series can be divided into 5 groups of three terms each _ each group comprising of two letters followed by a number.

Z __ 25 / Y B 23 / X C __ / W _ 19 / _ E 17

Observing the group Y B 23, we find that in a group, the number is the difference of the numbers representing the positions of the two letters in the English alphabet.

Thus, putting A = 1, B = 2, ....., Y = 25, Z = 26,

we have : Y - B = 25 - 2 = 23.

Similarly, missing term is 3rd group = X -C = 24 - 3 = 21;

missing term in 1st group = Z - 25 = 26 - 25 = 1 = A.

So, the first and second missing terms are A and 21 respectively, which are given only in (a).

Question : 3

D _ 6 E G P _ H J _ 12 K M B 15 _

a) E, 7, J, L

b) G, 9, I, M

c) F, 8, M, K

d) J, 9, V, N

Answer: (d)

From the alternatives, it is clear that the series can be divided into 4 groups of four terms each _ each group comprising of three letters and a number in the third place.

D _ 6 E / G P _ H / J _ 12 K / M B 15 _

studying the pairs 6E and 12K, we find that in each group, the number is one more than the number representing the position of the letter in the fourth place, in the English alphabet.

Thus, putting A = 1, B =2, ....., Y = 25, Z = 26,

we have: 2nd missing term = H + 1 = 8 + 1 = 9; 4th missing term = 15 - 1 = 14th letter = N.

Thus, the 2nd and 4th missing terms are 9 and N respectively, which are given only in (d).

Question : 4

ab _ bbc _ c _ ab _ ab _ b

a) cbabc

b) ccaac

c) cacac

d) bccab

Answer: (c)

The series is abc/b/bca/c/cab/a/abc/b.

Question : 5

_ aaba _ bba _ bba _ abaa _ b

a) aabab

b) baaba

c) ababa

d) bbaba

e) bbaaa

Answer: (a)

The series aaab/aabb/abbb/aaab/aabb.

Question : 6

ab _ bcbca _ _ c _ bab

a) acbc

b) abcc

c) baaa

d) ccaa

Answer: (d)

The series is abcbc/bcaca/cabab.

Thus, the series consists of three sequences. The first sequence begins with a, the second with b, and the third with c. Each sequence consists of a letter followed by the pair of other two letters repeated twice.
