Question :16

Nine numbers are written in ascending order. The middle number is the average of the nine numbers. The average of the first five larger numbers is 68 and that of five smaller numbers is 44. What is the sum of all nine numbers?

Answer: (b)

Since, 5th term = average of 9 numbers = x

Sum of first five larger numbers = 68 × 5 = 340

Sum of first five smaller numbers = 44 × 5 = 220

Average of nine numbers = ${340 + 220 - x}/9$

(since, x is subtracted because 5th term repeated twice)

∴ $x = {560 - x}/9$

⇒ 9x + x = 560 ⇒ x = 56

∴ Sum of 9 numbers = 56 × 9 = 504

Answer: (c)

Put x = 100 to get the weight of the containers.

Use these weights of find average weight as 2600/4 = 650.

Question :19

The average of five numbers is 281. The average of the first two numbers is 280 and the average of the last two numbers is 178.5. What is the third number ?

Answer: (b)

Assume the third number = x

According to question

2 × 280 + x + 178.5 × 2 = 281 × 5

or, 560 + x + 357 = 1405

or, x + 917 = 1405

or, x = 1405 - 917 = 488
