Directions:
In each of the following questions, a sentence has been given in direct/indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested select the one which best expresses the same sentence in indirect/ direct speech.
"If you don't keep quiet I shall shoot you," he said to her in a calm voice.
Answer: (a)
Note that 'calmly' should refer to the voice or manner of conveying the warning and not to his state of mind (c) or her keeping quiet (d).
"What did you eat for breakfast today?" the doctor asked the patient.
Answer: (b)
The use of 'whether' in indirect speech is wrong here as it suggests the meaning of 'if'. This meaning is not conveyed by the given sentence (in direct speech).
Rohit said, "I need some money."
Answer: (d)
The given sentence is in direct speech.
My cousin said, "My roommate snored throughout the night."
Answer: (d)
'Her roommate had snored' is essential in indirect speech as when my cousin said, the event of her roommate snoring throughout the night had already occurred.
He said to her, "May you succeed!"
Answer: (a)
Options (b) and (c) would be incorrect if we keep the meaning of the given sentence in mind. For these to be correct, the sentence in direct speech should be: He said to her, "You might succeed."
