Each question in this section consists of a word in capital letters followed by four words or group of words. Select the word or group of words that is most opposite in meaning to the word in capital letters.

The man at the gate had a forbidding appearance.
Answer: (c)
Forbidding means threatening or frightening. Handsome means good-looking. Lenient means compassionate. Filthy means dirty. Mild means gentle or kind. Mild should be the correct antonym for forbidding.
