In each of the following sentences, a part of the sentence has been italicised. Below are given alternatives to the part italicised which may improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative. Wherever no improvement is needed, choose 'No correction required' or 'No improvement' as the answer.

'Set in' means 'to begin'. 'Set out' is 'to start or go forth'; 'set up' is 'to begin a company, etc.', (one sets up something); 'set off' is 'to start off'.

'Level' something 'against' someone means to accuse or place a charge against someone.

She could not help but laugh.

Answer: (d)

Option (c) is also grammatically correct but there is a slight difference. 'She could not help laughing' means that laughing came naturally to her as a reaction or as her response.

But 'she could not help but laugh' means she could only respond by laughing.

Question :29

What are needed are not large houses but small cottages.

Answer: (b)

Option (b) is right because 'what' here suggests a singular noun. (The thing that/which 'is' needed are not large houses but small cottages.)

Question :30

They felt humiliated because they realised that they had cheated.

Answer: (a)

When they felt humiliated they realised that they had already been cheated (before the time of humiliation or the realisation). The past perfect continuous tense is used to express an action in the past that continued for some time before another action took place.
