Questions : The asteroids revolve round the Sun in between :

(a) Jupiter and Saturn

(b) Saturn and Uranus

(c) Mars and Jupiter

(d) Earth and Mars

The correct answers to the above question in:

Answer: (c)

Asteroids, sometimes called minor planets, are small, rocky fragments left over from the formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Most of this ancient space rubble can be found orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids range in size from Ceres, about 952 km (592 miles) in diameter, to bodies that are less than 1 km across.

The total mass of all the asteroids is less than that of Earth’s Moon.

Answer: (c)

Question : 2

Consider the following pairs:

  1. Electromagnetic radiation
  2. Geothermal energy
  3. Gravitational force
  4. Plate movements
  5. Rotation of the earth
  6. Revolution of the earth.
Which of the above are responsible for bringing dynamic changes on the surface of the earth?

a) 2, 4, 5 and 6 only

b) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

c) 1, 3, 5 and 6 only

d) 1, 2, 3 and 4 only

Answer: (b)

From electromagnetic radiation to the revolution of the earth, everything is responsible for bringing dynamic changes on the surface of the earth. For example,

Electromagnetic radiation brings changes in the field of microwaves, wavelengths of radio, UV rays, infrared rays, X rays, and gamma rays.

Geothermal energy is the heat received from the earth’s core. This heat continuously flows outward. It transfers to the surrounding layers of rock, the mantle. When temperature and pressure become very high some mantle rocks melt becoming magma. It then either comes out as lava or heats up the nearby rocks and water which comes out as hot springs or geysers.

Gravitational force is constantly working on all physical bodies. It is giving weights to objects with mass and causes them to fall to the ground when dropped. Plate movement is a dynamic change on the surface of the earth. It explains many aspects of the interrelationship of volcanoes, earthquakes, climate change, and the evolution of life itself.

Everything about our planet is related either directly or indirectly to plate tectonics. Rotation causes day and night. Revolution causes seasons, change in the length of day and night.

Question : 3

Consider the following statements

  1. The Earth does not move along its orbit at a constant rate.
  2. The Earth moves fastest at perihelion and slowest at aphelion.
The above statements are true of which one of the following laws?

a) Ohm’s law

b) Newton’s law of gravitation

c) Newton’s second law of motion

d) Kepler’s second law

Answer: (d)

Kepler’s second law of planetary motion describes the speed of a planet traveling in an elliptical orbit around the sun. It states that a line between the sun and the planet sweeps equal areas in equal times.

Thus, the speed of the planet increases as it nears the sun and decreases as it recedes from the sun.

Question : 4

The Earth is divided into time zones for the purpose of

a) both are correct

b) both are incorrect

c) maintaining same time

d) maintaining a standard time system

Answer: (d)

The earth is divided into time zones for maintaining a standard time system. A time zone is any of the 24 geographical areas into which the Earth is divided for the purpose of maintaining a standard time system. Clocks within a given time zone are set to the same time.

Question : 5

Which of the following planets is known as “Red Planet”?

a) Jupiter

b) Saturn

c) Mars

d) Earth

Answer: (c)

Mars is known as Red planet. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System. Named after the Roman God of war, it is often described as the “Red Planet” because the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance.

Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, having surface features reminiscent both of the impact craters of the Moon and the volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth.
