The modern iron and steel industry in India owes its origin to the grand vision and perseverance of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. The construction of the steel plant was then taken up in earnest with the first stake being driven in February 1908.

This plant produced iron in 1911 and steel in 1913. In 1919, the Indian Iron and Steel Company established a steel plant, at Burnpur (Hira Pur-Kolkata).
