Began to complain when he found that, at home, b Personification
His cupboard was empty, and winter was come. b  
Not a crumb to be found a  
On the snow-covered ground; a  
Not a flower could he see, b  
Not a leaf on a tree. b  
"Oh! what will become," says cricket, "of me?" a Personification
At last by starvation and famine made bold, b Personification
All dripping with wet, and all trembling with cold, b Alliteration
Away he set off to a miserly ant, c Personification
To see if, to keep him alive, he would grant c  
Him shelter from rain. a  
And a mouthful of grain. a  
He wished only to borrow; b  
He'd repay it tomorrow; b  
If not, he must die of starvation and sorrow b Alliteration
Says the ant to the cricket, “I’m your servant and friend, a Personification
But we ants never borrow; we ants never lend. a Personification
But tell me, dear cricket, Did you lay anything by b Personification
When the weather was warm?” Quoth the cricket, “Not I!” b Alliteration
My heart was so light a Personification
That I sang day and night, a Personification
For all nature looked gay.” “For all nature looked gay” b  
“ You sang, Sir, you say? b Personification
Go then”, says the ant, “and dance the winter away” a Personification
Thus ending, he hastily lifted the wicket, b  
And out of the door turned the poor little cricket. b  
Folks call this a fable. I‘ll warrant it true: c Alliteration
