Questions : 4 boys and 3 girls spent Rs.120 on the average, of which boys spent Rs.150 on the average. Then the average amount spent by the girls is

The correct answers to the above question in:

Answer: (d)

Total expenditure = 120 × 7 = Rs. 840

Total expenditure of 4 boys = 150 × 4 =Rs. 600

Total expenditure of 3 girls = 840 – 600 = Rs. 240

∴ Their average expenditure

= $240/3$ = Rs. 80

The average weight of A, B and C is 45 kg. If the average weight of A and B be 40 kg and that of B and C be 43 kg, then the weight (in kg) of B is

Answer: (a)

Weight of B = (A + B)’s weight + (B + C)’s weight – (A + B + C)’s weight

= 40 × 2 + 43 × 2 – 45 × 3

= 80 + 86 – 135

= 166 – 135 = 31 kg

The average of 100 numbers is 44. The average of these 100 numbers and 4 other new numbers is 50. The average of the four new numbers will be

Answer: (c)

Sum of 4 new numbers

= 50 ×104 – 100 × 44

= 5200 – 4400 = 800

∴ Average = $800/4$ = 200

Aliter : Using Rule 19,

Here, N = 100, T = 44

n = 4, y = 50 – 44 = 6

∴ Average of new numbers

= T+ $({N/n}+1)$

= 44+ $({100/4}+1) ×6$

= 44 + 26 × 6

= 44 + 156 = 200

12 kg of rice costing Rs.30 per kg is mixed with 8 kg of rice costing Rs.40 per kg.The average per kg price of mixed rice is

a) Rs.35

b) Rs.34

c) Rs.37

d) Rs.38

Answer: (b)

Total cost price of 20kg of mixed rice

Rs. (12 × 30 + 8 × 40) = Rs.680

∴ Average per kg price = $680/20$ = Rs.34

Aliter : Using Rule 2,

$x_1$ = 12, $A_1$ = 30

$x_2$ = 8, $A_2$ = 40

∴ Average = ${A_1x_1 + A_2x_2}/{x_1+x_2}$

${30×12+40×8}/{12+8}$

${360+320}/20$

= $680/20$

= Rs.34

Question : 5

The average of 8 numbers is 27. If each of the numbers is multiplied by 8, find the average of new set of numbers.

a) 316

b) 216

c) 938

d) 1128

Answer: (b)

If each item is multiplied by 8, their average gets multiplied by 8.

∴ Required average

= 8 × 27 = 216

Question : 6

The average weight of five persons sitting in a boat is 38 kg. The average weight of the boat and the persons sitting in the boat is 52kg. What is the weight of the boat ?

a) 232 kg

b) 242 kg

c) 122 kg

d) 228 kg

Answer: (c)

Weight of the boat

= 6 × 52 – 5 × 38

= 312 – 190 = 122 kg
