a) 18

b) 15

c) 12

d) 21

Answer: (b)

Required average

= ${3(1+2+3+…+9)}/9$

= ${9×10}/{2×3}$ = 15

Aliter : Using Rule 9,

Here, n = 9, x = 3

Average = x$({1+n}/2)$

Question : 2

Eight consecutive numbers are given. If the average of the two numbers that appear in the middle is 6, then the sum of the eight given numbers is

a) 48

b) 36

c) 64

d) 54

Answer: (a)

Let the first number be x.

∴ x + 3 + x + 4 = 2 × 6

⇒ 2x + 7 = 12

⇒ 2x = 5 ⇒ x =$5/2$

∴ x + (x + 1) + ....... + (x + 7) = 8x + 28

= 8×$5/2$+ 28 = 20 + 28 = 48

Question : 3

If the average of eight consecutive even numbers be 93, then the greatest number among them is

a) 98

b) 102

c) 86

d) 100

Average of numbers = ${x_1+x_2+…+x_n}/n$

The required average

=${2+3+5+7+11+13+17+19+23}/9$

=$100/9$ = 11 $1/9$

Question : 5

The sum of three consecutive even numbers is 28 more than the average of these three numbers. Then the smallest of these three numbers is

a) 16

b) 14

c) 12

d) 6

Answer: (c)

Let three consecutive even numbers be x, x + 2 and x + 4. According to the question,

(x + x + 2 + x + 4) – ${x+x+2+x+4}/3$= 28

⇒ (3x + 6) – ${3x+6}/3$ = 28

⇒ (3x + 6) – (x + 2) = 28

⇒ 3x + 6 – x – 2 = 28

⇒ 2x + 4 = 28

⇒ 2x = 28 – 4 = 24

⇒ x = $24/2$ = 12
