Questions : If a : b = 7 : 9 and b : c =15 : 7, then what is a : c?

(a) 7 : 21

(b) 7 : 15

(c) 3 : 5

(d) 5 : 3

The correct answers to the above question in:

Answer: (d)

a : c = (a : b) × (b : c)

=$7/9 ×15/7 = 15/9$ = 5 : 3

Using Rule 18
If A:B = x:y and B:C = p:q then
(i) A:C = xp : yq
(ii) A:B:C = (x:y) × p:qy =xp:yp:qy
It is done as follows:
A:B = x:y
B:C = p:q
A:B:C = xp:yp:qy

A : C = 7 × 15 : 9 × 7 = 5 : 3

Question : 1

If a : b : c = 2 : 3 : 4 and 2a - 3b + 4c = 33, then the value of c is

a) 12

b) $66/7$

c) 9

d) 6

Answer: (a)

a : b : c = 2 : 3 : 4

$a/2 = b/3 =c/4$ = k (let)

a = 2k, b = 3k, and c = 4k

Given 2a - 3b + 4c = 33

2 × 2k - 3×3k + 4 ×4k = 33

4k - 9k + 16k = 33

11k = 33 ⇒ k = $33/11$ = 3

c = 4k = 4×3 = 12

Question : 2

Rs.6200 divided into three parts proportional to $1/2 : 1/3 : 1/5$ are respectively

a) Rs.2500, Rs.2000, Rs.1700

b) Rs.2200, Rs.3000, Rs.1000

c) Rs.3500, Rs.1500, Rs.1200

d) Rs.3000, Rs.2000, Rs.1200

Answer: (d)

Ratio = $1/2 : 1/3 : 1/5$

= $1/2 × 30 : 1/3 × 30 : 1/5$ × 30

= 15 : 10 : 6

Sum of the ratios

= 15 + 10 + 6 = 31

First part

= Rs.$15/31$ × 6200 = Rs.3000

Second part

= Rs.$10/31$ × 6200 = Rs.2000

Third part

= Rs.$6/31$ × 6200 = Rs.1200

Question : 3

If A : B = $1/2 : 3/8, B : C = 1/3 : 5/9 and C : D = 5/6 : 3/4$, then the ratio A : B : C : D is

a) 8 : 6 : 10 : 9

b) 4 : 6 : 8 : 10

c) 6 : 8 : 9 : 10

d) 6 : 4 : 8 : 10

Answer: (a)

A : B = $1/2 : 3/8$ =4 : 3 = 8 : 6

B : C = $1/3 : 5/9$ = 3 : 5 = 6 : 10

C : D = $5/6 : 3/4$ = 10 : 9

A : B : C : D = 8 : 6 : 10 : 9
