Question : 1
Five years ago, the average age of P, Q and R was 25 years and seven years ago, the average age of Q and R was 20 years. The present age of P is
a) 29 years
b) 36 years
c) 21 years
d) 24 years
Answer »Answer: (b)
Sum of the present age of P, Q and R
= (25 × 3 + 3 × 5) years
= (75 + 15) years = 90 years
Sum of the present age of Q and R
= (20 × 2 + 2 × 7) years = 54 years
∴ p’s present age = (90 – 54) years = 36 years
Question : 2
The average age of 40 students of a class is 15 years. When 10 new students are admitted, the average is increased by 0.2 year. The average age of the new students is :
a) 16 years
b) 15.2 years
c) 16.4 years
d) 16.2 years
Answer »Answer: (a)
Total age of 40 old students = 40 × 15 = 600 years.
Total age of 40 old and 10 new students = 50 × 15.2 = 760 years
∴ Total age of 10 new students = 760–600 = 160 years.
∴ Required average age = $160/10$ = 16 years.
Question : 3
The average age of 30 boys in a class is 15 years. One boy aged 20 years, left the class, but two new boys came in his place whose ages differ by 5 years. If the average age of all the boys now in the class still remains 15 years, the age of the younger newcomer is :
a) 15 years
b) 20 years
c) 8 years
d) 10 years
Answer »Answer: (a)
Let the age of younger boy be x years.
∴ Age of older boy = (x + 5) years.
Then, total age of 30 boys = 30 × 15 = 450 years.
Total age of 31 boys after two newcomers join &1 left
= 450 – 20 + x + x + 5
= 435 + 2x
Clearly, 435 + 2x = 31 × 15
⇒ 2x = 465 – 435
⇒ x = $30/2$ =15 years
Question : 4
The average age of Ram and his two children is 17 years and the average age of Ram’s wife and the same children is 16 years. If the age of Ram is 33 years, the age of his wife is (in years):
a) 32
b) 31
c) 30
d) 35
Answer »Answer: (c)
Ram + two children = 51 years

a) 400
b) 396
c) 416
d) 408
Answer »Answer: (b)
Let the number of students be n. Then,

⇒ 7n + 84 = 6n + 480
⇒ n = 480 – 84 = 396
Question : 6
