Directions:

    (a) if only assumption I is implicit;
    (b) if only assumption II is implicit;
    (c) if either I or II is implicit;
    (d) if neither I nor II is implicit and
    (e) if both I and II are implicit.

Question : 16 [R.R.B. 2004]

  • Statement:
  • “To keep myself up-to-date, I always listen to 9.00 p.m. news on the radio.”- A candidate tells the interview board.
  • Assumptions:
  • I. The candidate does not read the newspaper.
  • II. Recent news is broadcast only on the radio.

a) If only assumption I is implicit;

b) If only assumption II is implicit;

c) If either I or II is implicit;

d) If neither I nor II is implicit and

e) If both I and II are implicit.

Answer: (d)

The candidate listens to the news on the radio does not mean that he does not read the newspaper or that radio is the only source of recent news.

So, neither I nor II is implicit.

Question : 17 [R.B.I. 2005]

  • Statement:
  • There has been a remarkable increase in air traffic in India during the past few years.
  • Assumptions:
  • I. Travelling by air has become a status symbol now.
  • II. A large number of people are able to afford air travel now.

a) If only assumption I is implicit;

b) If only assumption II is implicit;

c) If either I or II is implicit;

d) If neither I nor II is implicit and

e) If both I and II are implicit.

Answer: (b)

The statement indicates that the number of people traveling by air has increased in recent years. This clearly implies that large number of people can now afford air travel.

So, only II is also implicit.

Question : 18 [M.A.T. 2003]

  • Statement:
  • Science is a sort of news agency comparable in principle to other news agencies. But this news agency gives us information which is reliable to an extraordinarily high degree due to elaborate techniques of verification and its capacity to survive centuries. So, science should be read with as much interest as we read the news.
  • Assumptions:
  • I. Science encourages the investigative spirit.
  • II. People read the news out of interest.

a) If only assumption I is implicit;

b) If only assumption II is implicit;

c) If either I or II is implicit;

d) If neither I nor II is implicit and

e) If both I and II are implicit.

Answer: (e)

The statement mentions that science is reliable as facts can be verified by an investigation. So, I is implicit.

II follows directly from the last sentence in the statement and so it is also implicit.

Question : 19 [SIDBI, 2000]

  • Statement:
  • "It has become a necessity to computerize all the functions of our Institute to maintain the present position." - A statement of the Director of XYZ Institute.
  • Assumptions:
  • I. Unless computerized, the Institute will fall behind the race.
  • II. The functions of the Institute are too complex to be handled manually.

a) If only assumption I is implicit;

b) If only assumption II is implicit;

c) If either I or II is implicit;

d) If neither I nor II is implicit and

e) If both I and II are implicit.

Answer: (e)

The Director asserts that computerization is essential to maintain the present state of affairs in the future. This means that the Institute will lag behind in the absence of computerization.

This in turn implies that the functions of the Institute are too cumbersome and time-consuming and can be handled in time only through computers.

So, both I and II are implicit.

Question : 20 [M.B.A. 2002]

  • Statement:
  • The product X that you have asked for is not with us but can be made available against firm order from you.
  • Assumptions:
  • I. The product X is not in great demand.
  • II. The product X is out of stock as a new model is coming up.

a) If only assumption I is implicit;

b) If only assumption II is implicit;

c) If either I or II is implicit;

d) If neither I nor II is implicit and

e) If both I and II are implicit.

Answer: (a)

The statement mentions that the seller does not keep product X in ready stock and intends to provide the same only against a confirmed order from the customer. So, I is implicit.

However, II appears to be vague in this context.
