What is Coding in Verbal Reasoning?

When any letters/ words/ sentences is written or said in such a language which hides the actual meaning of those particular letters/ words/ sentences from other Expert desired person.

What is Decoding in Verbal Reasoning?

What is Coding & Decoding in Verbal Reasoning?

Coding – Decoding is process of transmitting information from one place to other using some suitable codes, so that it might reach to other person safely. Coding – decoding of information is done with various rules or patterns, so that only the right person can decipher it.

A code is the system of signals. Therefore, coding is a method of communication of a message between the sender & the receiver without a third person knowing it. The coding and decoding test is a set up to judge the candidate's ability to decipher the rule that codes the particular word/ massage and break the code to decipher the information.


How to Learn Position of Letters in English Alphabet with Shortcuts?

Sometimes a word or a sentence is coded by changing the positions of English alphabet letter according to a definite pattern, so it is necessary to remember the positions of all the letters in English alphabetical order both in forward and backward orders.

To solve the questions based on Coding – Decoding, first of all it is necessary to remember the positions of all alphabetical letters, both in forward and backward order. Several ways for easy remembering of these positions are discussed below,

1. Forward order positioning of letters:

If you find it difficult to remember backwardorder position but, if they keep forward order positions of letters in the mind, they can easily calculated the backward order position of letters in the following ways.

Backward order position of any letter = 27 - Forward order position of the letters

ie., Backward order position of A = 27 - Forward order position A

= 27 - 1 = 26

3. Opposite order positioning of letters:

These are called opposite letters as the forward order corresponding position of an opposite letter is as same as the backward order corresponding position of its opposite letter.

Letters of English alphabet can be arranged either in linear form or in circular form as shown below.

1. Linear Arrangement: (Straight Line Arrangement)

  1. Left to Right linear arrangement of alphabets,

Understanding of linear and circular arrangement is very important as when, you have to find the letters forward or backward within the limit of all 26 letters of English alphabet, you can also use linear arrangement but when we have to find the letters before A or after Z, then circular arrangement is very useful.

If you have to find the letter one place forward to A, then that letter will be Z and this result can be found out by using either linear or circular arrangement but when one is asked to find the letter which is one letter backward of A (Z is one letter backward of A) or one letter forward of Z (A is one letter forward of Z), then only circular arrangement gives such results.

3 Useful Ways To Remember The Position of Letters in The English Alphabet

Important Note: Some methods/ techniques are given below are to remember the positions of English alphabets for forward, backward, opposite order of letters.

Method 1. To remember Forward order position:

By using CFILORUX and EJOTY formulae , we can easily remember the position of letters of English alphabet in forward order.

  1. Here is a gap of two letters between each letter of the word group "CFILORUX"
  2. forward-order-cfilorux

    (Sounds like a "medicine name")

    CFILORUX Sounds like an injection name because the injections which are prescribed by doctors are having strange names.

  3. Here is a gap of four letters between each letter of the word group "EJOTY"
  4. forward-order-ejoty

    (Sounds like a Female name "Joti")

    EJOTY sounds like a girl name that is JOTI, so it could be remembered by this name.


Method 2. To remember Backward order position:

You will find it difficult to remember backward order position but, if they keep forward order positions of letters in their mind, they can easily calculate the backward order positions of letters in the following way

To find the,
Backward order position of a letter = (27 – Forward order position of a letter)

E.g.,
Backward order position of a letter (D) = (27 – Forward order position of a letter (D)) = 27 – 4 = 23

Therefore, Backward order position of a letter (D) = 23


Method 3. To remember Opposite order position:

There is an easy way to understand by a simple formula to find the corresponding position of that letter.

First find the position of opposite letter,

Opposite position of a letter = (27 – Corresponding position of that letter)

E.g.,
Opposite position of a letter (F) = (27 – Corresponding position of that letter (F)) = 27 – 6 = 21

Therefore, Opposite position of a letter (F) = 21

i.e., position of (U) = 21

Then, make sum of their corresponding positions which will be equal to 27

i.e., F + U = 6 + 21 = 27
