The whole circumference of the dial in a clock is equal to 360° (means a circular path). In other words, we can say that when minute hand is moving in clockwise direction, starts from 12 to 1, 2, 3,…. again reaches at 12, then it completes one round which is equal to 360° of a full rotation.

By this the change in position of hands makes an angle between them because the one end of the hands is placed at one place at the center of the clock.

So, the angle between the hands is will change respectively to each second, minute and hours. By using simple concept, logic and some formulas will help you to solve easily and find the answer quickly.

Top 10 Important Key Facts used in Finding out the Hands Angles of the Clock - Verbal Reasoning

To solve these questions, follow the "10 important facts helps to find the angles between hour hand and minute hand of a clock", And which you should always keep in mind while solving such type of problems.

1. The hands of a clock rotate in a circular path. So, one rotation = full rotation = 360°.

2. Angle of 1 min space = 6°. ⇒ (i.e. ${360^0}/{60}$)

3. Angle of 5 min space = 30°. ⇒ (i.e. 5 x 1 min space or $5 × 360°/60$)

4. Angle of 15 min space = 90°. ⇒ (i.e. 15 x 1 min space or $15 × 360°/60$)

5. Angle of 30 min space = 180°. ⇒ (i.e. 30 x 1 min space or $30 × 360°/60$)

6. Angle of 45 min space = 270°. ⇒ (i.e. 45 x 1 min space or $45 × 360°/60$)

7. Angle of 60 min space = 1 hour min space = 360° or 0°. ⇒ (i.e. 60 x 1 min space or $60 × 360°/60$).

But here we should consider the hour hand position. The hour hand moves 5 min space for every hour (means one full rotation of minute hand).

1 hour space = 5 min space = 30°

1 h = $360°/12=30°$

Respectively add 30° to no. of hours.

For example, 3hr space = 3 x 30 = 90°.

8. It shows the angle between two consecutive digits/numbers of a clock is 30°.

9. It’s also clears that, hour hand traces an angle of $(1/2)^0$ in 1 min.

10. Finally, Angle traced per minute by, Second hand = 360°, Minute hand = 6°, Hour hand = $(1/2)^0$

Some Example MCQ Questions & Answers with Explanation for Better Understanding of the Clocks Type -1 Concept

In this type of question, a particular time is given and the candidate is required to find out the angle between the hour hand and the minute hand at that particular time.

For solving these types of questions, a candidate is required to have a basic knowledge of the angles traced by the different hands in a clock.

  • The circumference of the dial of a clock is equal to 360°.
  • In other words, we can say that when the minute hand, moving clockwise, starts from 12 and again reaches 12, then it completes one round which is equal to 360°.
  • The angle between two consecutive digits/numbers of a clock is 30°.
  • When the minute hand completes one round, then it crosses 60 min spaces of the dial.

Let's work out some examples based on finding the angle between the hands of a clock.

Example 1:

How much angular distance will be covered by the minute hand of a good clock in a period of 1 h 40 min at whole?

(a) 480 ° (b) 600 ° (c) 560 ° (d) 192 °

Hint: Answer: (b)

Total minute spaces covered = 1 h + 40 min = 60 min + 40 min = 100 min,

We know 1 min space = 6°,

100 min space = 100 x 6° = 600°

Example 2:

What is the angle traced by hour hand in 20 min?

(a) 8 ° (b) 12.5 ° (c) 10 ° (d) 15 °

Hint: Answer: (c)

Angle traced by hour hand in 1 min = $(1/2)^o$

Angle traced by hour hand in 20 min=20 x $(1/2)^o=10°$

Note: If they ask you to find trace of second hand then multiply with 360° per minutes/rotations (or) to find trace of minute hand then multiply with 6° per minute.

Example 3:

What will be the angle between two hands of a clock when the time is 5 : 45?

(a) 70 ° (b) 85 ° (c) 68 ° (d) 72 °

Hint: Answer: (a)

Method 1: Using formula

In the given problem, hour hand is behind the minute hand. Also, given n = 7, x = 45. Then, according to the formula,

Angle needed = $\{30(x/5-\text"n")-x/2\}^o$
$⇒ \{30(40/5-\text"5")-40/2\}^o$ $⇒ (30 x 3 - 20)° = 70°$
