Directions:
In each of the following sentences, a part of the sentence has been italicised. Below are given alternatives to the part italicised which may improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative; wherever no improvement is needed, choose 'No correction required' or 'No improvement' as the answer.
To succeed in a difficult task, persistent is needed.
Answer: (b)
'Persistent' is an adj. but 'persistence' is a noun. 'Persistence is needed to succeed in a difficult task' will be the best way of conveying the meaning of the sentence.
Of the given options, (b) suits. 'Persistence is needed' (not given) would again be a right option but not a past tense form of the same [given in (c)]. (a) is unnecessarily wordy and in passive form.
What were you doing ever since I last saw you?
Answer: (b)
The use of 'since' implies 'from a certain point of time to this time'. It doesn't refer to a period that is over. 'Since' and 'ever since' are used with perfect tenses only.
I am quite hopeful of securing very high marks in the examination.
Answer: (d)
No improvement.
Asking me why was I absent, I was punished by the headmaster.
Answer: (b)
Subject-verb inversion occurs only in interrogatives; here, there is a statement form of sentence.
He found the gold coin as he cleans the floor.
Answer: (d)
Though 'as' also conveys the sense of 'while' or 'when', better usage here is 'while'.
