Directions:

In each of the following sentences, a part of the sentence has been italicised. Below are given alternatives to the part italicised which may improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative; wherever no improvement is needed, choose 'No correction required or 'No improvement' as the answer.

Question :11

Despite his old age, his movements were as spirited as a young man.

Answer: (c)

The comparison is between his movements in old age (now) and what they were when he was a young man.

In (c), the word 'movements' is understood at the end of the sentence though not specifically mentioned.

The construction is parallel: 'his' movements—'young man's' (movements). (b) may seen correct, but the construction is not parallel. It would be correct if the first part read: 'the movements of the man'.

Question :12

Every human advance carries with it not only automatic benefits but also a new responsibility, and we must remain constantly aware for the dangers that lie in the possible misuse of our enormous skills.

Answer: (a)

The correct preposition to follow aware is 'of'.

Question :13

They watched the sea lions being fed with fish.

Answer: (d)

When they watched, an action was happening, i.e., the sea lions were being fed.

Question :14

The officer whom I went reported that my case was pending.

Answer: (c)

In formal English, we use preposition + 'whom' as in the given sentence. Other e.gs., With whom did you go? To whom have you spoken? But in informal English, the preposition may be moved to the end of the sentence. Then, the 'whom' normally changes to 'who', e.gs., Who did you speak with? Who were you referring to?

Question :15

Any order which curbs a police officer from doing his duty is itself unlawful and should not be obeyed.

Answer: (a)

'Curb' means 'check' or 'restrain' and not totally 'stop' or 'not allow' which is what 'prevent' means. 'Obstruct' means 'block' or 'hinder'.
