A barrel contains a mixture of wine and water in the ratio 3: 1 . How much fraction of the mixture must be drawn off and substituted by water so that the ratio of wine and water in the resultant mixture in the barrel becomes 1 : 1 ?

According to the question,

Initial Ratio3: 14
Final Ratio1: 12 × 2

1 unit taken out and added

Hence Required part of quantity = $1/3$

Alternative :

Let the quantity of liquid drawn out = x

${3 - 3/4 x}/{1 - 1/4 x + x} = 1/1$

12 - 3x = 4 - x + 4x

8 = 6x

x = $4/3$

Hence required part of quantity = ${4/3}/4 = 1/3$

Question :2

A mixture of 80 litres of wine and water contains 60 percent wine how much water must be added to make it 50 percent wine in the new mixture?

Answer: (d)

According to the question

Given :

Mixture of wine and water = 80 liters

Initial winer concentration = 60 %

Calculations:

Amount of wine in 80 litre of mixture = 60% of 80 = 48 litres

Amount of water in 80 litre of mixture = 80 - 48 = 32 litres

Also, 50 percent wine in the new mixture means 50 percent water in the new mixture

According to the question,

32 + x = 50/100 × (80 + x)

2 (32 + x) = (80 + x)

64 + 2x = 80 + x

x = 16

∴ x = 16 litres

∴ 16 litres water must be added to make it 50 percent wine in the new mixture.

In a mixture of 25 litres, the ratio of acid to water is 4: 1. Another 3 litres of water is added to the mixture. The ratio of acid to water in the new mixture is:

According to the question,

Mixture = 25 liters

Ratio of ${Acid}/{Water} = 4/1$ > 5 units

∴ 5 units → 25 liters

1 unit → 5 liters

∴ ${Acid}/{Water} = {4 × 5}/{1 × 5} = 20/5$

Initial Ratio7 × 3: 1 × 3
Final Ratio 7 × 3: 1 × 7

Thus, Remember, water is added, not milk, so make milk equal

1 Unit = $40/24$ liters

4 units = $40/24 × 4$

= $40/6 = 24/3 = 6{2}/3$ liters

How many kg. of salt at 42 Paise per kg must a man mix with 25 kg of salt at 24 Paise per kg, so that he may, on selling the mixture at 40 Paise per kg. gain 25% on the outlay?

According to the question,

S.P. of the mixture = 40P per kg.

C.P. of the mixture = 40 × $100/125$ = 32 P per kg

Now using Alligation.

5 units → 25 kg

1 unit → 5 kg

4 units → 5 × 4 = 20 kg

∴ Salt at 42 P per kg was = 20 kg
