Question :1

Seven men can complete a work in 12 days. They started the work and after 5 days, two men left. In how many days will the work be completed by the remaining men?

(7 × 12) men can complete the work in 1 day.

∴ 1 man's 1 day's work = \$1/{84}\$.

7 men's 5 days' work = \$(1/12 × 5) = 5/{12}\$.

Remaining work = \$(1-{5/12}) = 7/12\$.

5 men's 1 day's work = \$(1/84 × 5) = 5/{84}\$.

\$5/{84}\$ work is done by them in 1 day.

\$7/{12}\$ work is done by them in

\$({84}/5 × 7/{12}) = {{49}/5} days = 9{4/5}\$ days

Question :2

If a family of 9 men in Indore spends Rs.16380 in a year, what must be the expenses of 8 men in Calcutta who live in the same style for 7 months, assuming that the prices at Calcutta are 3/5th of what they are in Indore ?

The factors by which the expenses change are = 8/9 × 7/12 × 3/5 × 16380 = 5096 for 7 months.

Question :3

If 6 men and 8 boys can do a piece of work in 10 days and 26 men and 48 boys can do the same work in 2 days, the time taken by 15 men and 20 boys to do the same type of work will be

Given (6 M + 8 B) ×10=(26 M + 48 B)×2

⇒60M+80B=52M+96B

⇒8M=16B

⇒1M=2B

∴15M+20B=30B+20B=50B

6M+8B=12B+8B=20B

Now

 Boys Days 20 10 50 ↓ x (Let)

∴ X = \${20 ×10}/{50}\$ = 4days

Question :4

76 ladies complete a job in 33 days. Due to some reason some ladies did not join the work and therefore, it was completed in 44 days. The number of ladies who did not report for the work is

Here \$M_1 D_1 = M_2 D_2\$

\$M_1 = 76 Ladies, M_2\$ = x Let

\$D_1 = 33 days D_2\$ = 44 days

⇒76 × 33 = x × 44

∴ x = 57 days

no. of ladies who did not Report

for work = 76 – 57 = 19.

Question :5

Two men and 7 children complete a certain piece of work in 4 days, while 4 men and 4 children complete the same work in only 3 days. The number of days required by 1 man to complete the work is :

(2M + 7C)'s 1 day's work = \$1/4\$

⇒ work will be completed by 4 (2M + 7C) = 8 M + 28 C

Again, (4M + 4C)'s 1 day's work = \$1/3\$

i.e. 12M + 12C will complete the work.

⇒8M + 28C = 12M + 12C or M = 4C

Therefore, 4M + 4C = 5M

Since 5M complete a work in 3 days,

1 M will complete it in 15 days.
