After 5 yrs, the age of a father will be thrice the age of his son, whereas five years ago, he was 7 times as old as his son was. What are their present ages?
Answer: (a)
Shortcut method :
Son's age = ${5(7 - 1) + 5(3 - 1)}/{7 - 3}$ = 10 yrs
From the first relationship of ages, if F is the age of the father then F + 5 = 3 (10 + 5)
∴ F = 40 yrs
The batting average for 30 innings of a cricket player is 40 runs. His highest score exceeds his lowest score by 100 runs. If these two innings are not included, the average of the remaining 28 innings is 38 runs. The lowest score of the player is:
Answer: (b)
Lowest score = x
Highest score = x + 100
∴ 28 × 38 + x + x + 100 = 30 × 40
⇒ 1064 + 2x + 100 = 1200
⇒ 2x = 1200 - 1164 = 36
⇒ x = 18

The class X of a Vidhyalaya has four sections: A, B, C and D. The average weight of the students of A, B, C together and A, C, D together are 45 kg and 55 kg respectively, while the average weight of the students of A, B, D together and B, C, D together are 50kg and 60kg respectively. Which of the following could be the average weight of the students of all the four sections together?
Answer: (b)
Let a, b, c, d, the number of students in section A, B, C, D respectively
then,
= ${45(a + b + c) + 55(a + c + d) + 50(a + b + d) + 60(b + c + d)}/{3(a + b + c + d)}$
= $50 + {5b + 10c + 15d}/{3(a + b + c + d)}$
Clearly, a, b, c, d are natural no. put a = b = c = d = 1
Then, required average
= $50 + 30/12$ = 50 + 2.5 = 52.5
