The Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award established to perpetuate former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay’s example of integrity in government, courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society. The Ramon Magsaysay Award is often considered Asia’s Nobel Prize.

The prize was established in April 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund based in New York City with the concurrence of the Philippine government. Sir Chintaman Dwarakanath Deshmukh won this award in 1959, becoming the second recipient of this award after Jipson John of Taiwan in 1958. He was an Indian civil servant and the first Indian to be appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in 1943 by the British Raj authorities. He subsequently served as the Finance Minister in the Union Cabinet (1950–1956).

After their resignation from the Union Cabinet He worked as Chairman of U.G.C.(1956–1961). He served as vice-chancellor of the University of Delhi (1962–67). He was also President of I.S.I.(Indian Statistical Institute) from 1945 to 1964, Honorary Chairman of National Book Trust (1957–60).

Human rights activist Bezwada Wilson and Carnatic musician Thodur Madabusi Krishna are winners of the Magsaysay Award from India in 2016. Acharya vinobha Bhave was the first Indian to receive the Ramon Magsaysay award in 1958 for community leadership.
